I used ally rivnuts in the end. My plate came from a German firm - very nice contours but making them impossible to rivet straight on (hence the change of plan to rivnuts). I recessed the screw heads into the plate a little so I could fill them with black Hammerite to hide the fact I was using bright stainless screws, also to seal any leaks (paranoia about bimetallic corrosion - also coated the threads with Duralac!)
I'm now learning not to cut corners and rivnut every time, first time. Doing my security grills again "properly" next week, Brendan Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Yep, as I said it's exactly the same as the chequer plate gaskets. A cheap and easy solution Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought!" - Princess Leia |

Not stainless unfortunately - black stainless fasteners would be my "Holy Grail"

Nice find
Just the job and not so expensive - about £30 (+p&p) for both wings. Can't be bothered to scrape the Hammerite off the ss ones to replace them yet though Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

I'm looking to remove my wing checkerplate to have it powder coated & painted black (currently standard 'silver').
If I can get to the rivnuts to hold then as I remove the bolts will I be able to reuse them? or do I have to buy new rivnuts and a tool? Same question for the nylock fasteners please Thanks, Dan. |

Rivnuts should be reusable. They are just a fixed insitu nut.
Reusing nylon nuts? IF it was a safety critical use it would be a big NO NO? However wing tops not exactly safety critical so I personally would not fret about reusing nyloc nuts. Purists might argue you should use new ones. If you have spare ones to hand use them, if not do not worry about reusing them. It depends on application. If safety involved use new ones, correctly torqued etc Brendan |

The big issue with these is whether the fastener gets stuck in the rivnut and/or the rivnut becomes loose or starts spinning making removal very difficult.
Agree on safety critical but for other applications you could just fit a spring washer as belt and braces. Or go the whole hog and swap out for some Binx nuts which are reuseable: |
