Fitting Mammouth checker plate wing tops.
Hello All,

I've just bought some Mammouth checker plate for the wing tops. Advice needed!

I assume that you stick the gasket to the underside of the checker plate. The kit comes with nuts and bolts. How do you access the underside? Through the heater vent hole or from underneath the wing?

Has anyone used rivnuts to hold these down or would this cause them to stand proud on the surface of the wing?

All help welcome.

Thanks,

Peter Defender 11MY USW

Underneath the wing if I remember correctly.
A tad fiddly so possibly a bit of electric tape over one side of the ring spanner (use this under the wing) to keep the nut in place until it bites.

I have fitted both genuine and pattern tops,, In all case, have been able to access via the wing top vents

Saying that, the last 5/6 sets have been genuine ones Thumbs Up California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1

I have the Mammouth ones was planning on using rivnuts as possibly easier option.

Have had made up rear corners and sill covers for my 130 and getting black powder coated and found supplier of black anodised ally countersunk fasteners.

Rivnuts all the way. Makes it sooo much easier. The foam gasket means the height of the 'rim' above the wing surface is lost.

You'll need some longer screws to re-fit the wingtop grills. I also made some gaskets for under the edges of those to allow for the irregular surface of the chequer plate.

Because the plates are countersunk and come with some nice matching Allen head bolts. Plus it means they can be removed easily if ever needed. Darren

I so wish that when the numpties put the wing top CP on mine 10 years ago had put the vents on top as the fixings are hidden by the fitted CP Rolling Eyes After having a couple get broken on my previous 90, kids and a branch, I'm dreading having to replace one on the 110, it's only a matter of time Whistle

I made the gaskets from 20mm wide sticky back foam that you can buy in rolls. The foam is exactly the same material as the chequer plate gaskets - some sort of neoprene. Once stuck to the underside of the grills, I just cut the outside edge to shape with a sharp pair of scissors. Darren

Rivnuts comes in three materials, aluminium, steel and stainless steel.

Also comes in a thin head and flat head. The thin head version has a flange typically 0.5mm whereas the flat heads are typically 1mm. Thin heads may be better under chequer plate.

Self adhesive foam? Apply to chequer plate rather then wing top. Easier if you ever have to remove it. Many types of self adhesive foam tape, ensure it is auto/external grade.

Now does self adhesive foam tape come in closed cell versions?

Irregular surface for putting snow cowl/air scoop/blanking plates on???

Not if you get the one of a site sponsors wing tops! Olaf has solved that problem Thumbs Up

Yes a machined flat recess. Also they come powdered coated all over Thumbs Up
