Is that oil leak normal ?
Hi everyone,

I just bought my Defender TD5 last week-end and put it in my garage yesterday after a 200km trip to get it back home.

Today when I went to my garage I noticed some oil on the floor (around 24 hours of having parked the car) :

And I noticed a bit of oil underneath the motor (sorry not familiar yet with all the TD5 motor parts and name yet) :

I'm well aware that Defenders are not oil proof at all and that they can leak oil. But my question is more till what limit is it normal ? And in my case is that oil leak normal ? Should I worry about it ?

Thanks Very Happy

That is engine oil. Check your rocker cover gasket. It is a known location for leaks. Welcome to TD5 ownership Thumbs Up

If it’s new don’t worry, it’s like a dog, and will want to mark its territory 😜😜

Thanks ! Very Happy

Thanks also for your quick answer ! I'll have a look at the rocker cover gasket this evening when I'll go back to my garage.

From what I think I saw (again not expert at all !) do you think the leak could come from this gasket with red arrow ? Because there was quite some oil there. Could the oil come from the rocker cover gasket and come down there ?

How can I check the rocker cover gasket ? If I unscrew everything I would need to replace the gasket right ?

Does not seem to come from the rover cover gasket which was pretty dry all around.

It seems to be coming near the oil filter, but it's becoming dark at that time. I'll have a deeper look tomorrow.

Well it has been known for the oil filter to be cross threaded on to the housing and it leaks because it is not seated properly. The other place it could be coming from is the turbo oil feed/return joints.

Until tomorrow Smile

I had a fairly significant oil leak at the end of last year from a cracked spin-on oil filter housing. Fiddly to replace in the cold, but not complicated. Charlie

Well I was not able to find the origin of the leak, the area is really hard to have in plain sight. There is a lot of oil around that sensor (?) but it's not far from the oil filter so still not sure where it could come from. Should I remove the oil filter and try to put is back to make sure it's well sealed ?

Also another question, is that normal that on the gearbox both holes are left open ?

That is the oil pressure sensor. I think you need to give the whole area a good clean with brake cleaner and start the search anew.

There should be a plug in the hole you have arrowed. The lower larger hole is usually left open.

Thanks for the quick answer, I'll clean the area asap before my next drive !

Should I worry about not having that plug ?

The TD5 normally has a plug in the wading plug hole (large one in your image).

The smaller hole/plug is just the location for the crank/flyweek timing pin.

Neither are really an issue not being fitted unless you were driving through very deep water.

Mine has had spots of oil there for 6 years or more. I just park it over some card. Check the fuel pressure regulator though at the back off side corner of the engine. Mine leaked and made its way down to the the area in your pic

I would suggest previous owner has removed sensor plug and wading plug from Bell housing as rear crank seal has gone that's your leak. F4om pics looks to more oil there than from filter area.

On a td5 normally both these would be plugged, I would ask why are they removed.

Looking at oil colour it needs a change and both filters anyway. Cheers

Also worth checking the Fuel Pressure Regulator on the top of the block. That turned out to be causing a similar oil leak on mine (as the diesel was washing the oil off the block).

You can tell as the Diesel will pool and collect on the top of the gearbox before running down.
