Air intake and need an advice on the Natakanenga snorkel
Good morning all. I have a Defender TD5 from 2003 equipped with a Mantec snorkel. Like some of you, I find that the air intake is poorly optimized, particularly in the inner wing.
I do not want to cut the engine cover to pass a larger hose and connect it to my area box, I am afraid that I will not be able to do clean work.

So I found at Natakanenga a snorkel kit with a diameter of 80 mm (the Mantec must be within 70 mm) which is directly connected to the air box by modifying it. The problem is that it makes me buy a new snorkel and that this kit is fixed on the wing above left of the TD5 (right for the TD5).

I know that on the forum, some have this model, on TD4. My question is, have you noticed an improvement in the performance of your Defender with a larger one (80 mm)? What do you think of the quality of Natakanenga's snorkel?

This makes me buy a new complete snorkel (I could resell the Mantec but hey ...), is the Natakanenga really more efficient?

There is a noticeable improvement in engine performance with the Nak intake, and the quality is superb.

You can also build your own. The tightest part is the hose under the bonnet with a 9.5 cm ID.

As I drive through the woods I don't like the top sticking out to much so braches get stuck below them.
I have a water collection system with a manual valve under the wing.

I think the system is effective I get less then 0.1 bar drop in AAP at 4000 rpm in third gear. Roel

Thank you for these answers. Indeed, building one myself would be much less expensive but I have neither the equipment nor the skills in welding. For these reasons I write this hypothesis.

I allow myself to take your photo to know if according to you, it would be possible to shorten the part between the two red lines, because I have the impression that the head of snorkel is likely to be too high for my Defender. I have a lifting roof and an LED bar which, once the roof is raised, risks touching the snorkel head.

LRA, yours looks marginally taller than mine anyway, perhaps you didn't ram the end on as hard as I did!

The second pic below shows that the cyclonic cleaner does overhang the roof, so there would be a limit to how far down you could move it.

They only seem to list them for Puma's although I can't see why they wouldn't fit a TD5, at first glance. The air box is essentially the same, ISTR? Darren

Yes Nakatanenga offers a TD5 version (LHD)

It will be installed on the top of the left wing and from what I have seen on the internet, the air box is modified to make a new entry under the flow meter.

I hesitated to take the model for TD4 as you have, because it would not change the location of the snorkel (my cables for the LEDs go through the right). But it would be necessary to build a room for the connection of the heating motor which is not identical to the TD4.

As my Defender is an LHD, I have on the side of the snorkel socket the heating block which makes this location particularly inaccessible. Impossible to pass an 80 mm pipe in large modifications. I could pass it over the top of the right wing but there would be, again, a modification of the air intake of the heating block.

I was wondering how the TD5 airbox was modified to receive the kit and I found this link where we can better understand the modifications.
