2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Alpine White

Engine Temperature / Winter

This is the first winter I have had my 2.4 D110, and I have a question regarding engine temperature. Normally my engine temperature once warmed up is approximately 95 degree C. This is read out on a Madman EMS2 installed, verified with a GAP Tool diagnostic reading also.

What I have noticed in the really cold days of this winter (-2 to -6 degrees) that my engine does not get up to temperature fully during my short commute to work. Approximately 10 miles / 20 minutes. Usually top out at 82 degrees C. The heater blows out hot air as usual. The problem is when I am idling at lights the temp drops a few degrees or more drastically when I needed to wait for a train to arrive one evening the engine temperature continues to drop all the way down into the mid 40 degree C range. Not sure if this is normal or if there is an issue with the thermostat (which is new) or the fan?

FYI - Allisport upgraded radiator and intercooler installed.

My Defender is the same and I think that the standard cooling system will cope with towing a heavy trailer across the Sahara

Mine runs at pretty much 90C in all weathers. Drops to about 84/86 when stationary in colder weather.

I’d be checking your thermostat, also your upgraded radiator may have more of an impact.

There was somebody on here not so long ago with one of the Allisport rads that reported something similar. I think it has a lot more capacity than the regular one. Darren

EGR is fully operational.

How would I go about checking the thermostat?
