They will work off the head unit, but will sound better amped. Regarding the original connectors, why would you want to keep them?? I tend to cut them off and generally use ring connections to the crossovers, either soldered or crimped. If you return to stock later just alter the connections back. However in the green machine I ran new dedicated speaker wires throughout, (powerful amps) Thumbs Up

I went with Focal PC 130's in the rear, far better bass then the 100's and more direct sound when they are mounted up top. They add the right range to the iSub under the rear seat, and the 4" 2 way speakers in the front dash.

Where did you get the speaker pods @cdn38 as they look nicer than the floor ones?

I built them. Actually I have made and sold about 15 so far to Defender owners, both here around Vancouver and in the US. Most have been for Td5's and NAS trucks, but I have done a Puma version as well. (the fitting around the rear window trim is slightly different for the Puma). The grey upholstery color is slightly different between the 3 versions as well.

It took about 5 or 6 proto types to get a good universal fit for the Defender "build tolerance" and a mounting system that would fit all the different versions. Got it down to a science now, easy to install and rock solid. It's great to have the speakers up top where they can he heard, but they don't look too obtrusive. I wanted to keep a low profile stock look, but also be functional. it's a Landrover thing...

CDN38 very nice, shame you are not in UK Smile

Those with 5.25 speakers in front what's the diameter of the speakers with the grill on? Edit found it for the focal access range I was looking at now Smile

I'm going to measure up on the weekend to see if I like the look on the fronts, before deciding which speakers to get. There are so many makes out there to choose from bit :it's down to JL audio or focal at moment in my budget of £100 a pair. I've ordered the rear speaker pods from LR today and will cut the holes myself when I know what size will fit and look good 5.25 or maybe 6.5's maybe?

Right I'm going to get 5.25 components up front and coaxial 5.25 in the back , I've decided on these focal's as they seem popular . I'm trying to decide between the access series or the performance expert which are a little more expensive . The PS / PC series have a higher sensitivity to the access which I guess is better without an amp.

No problem.... Big Dave could easily facilitate getting one of these panels to you. I think he's pretty much shipped half my truck to me from the UK, pieces at a time! it's a Landrover thing...

In the end I opted for JBL GTO (429/529) line speakers as they seemed to get good reviews and with 10% off worked out a good price.. I put 5" in rear speaker pods and after much deliberation I went with 4" coaxial in the front. I had to lose the spacers in the front as the holes would not line up right. I had to drill new holes in dash closer to the mounting hole edge. The plan is to stick a active Kenwood sw11 sub on back of bulk head or cubby box next and I think that will be adaquate. I may at a later date change mind on the fronts and get components but I just felt they may look a little big . Pics to follow. I will say the standard tdci speaker pods trimmed are not the best fit and i can't get the passenger side one to sit flat for some reason.. but I've spent enough time on it now lol

I owe you all some pics of the finished install

Backs are JBL GTO529

Fronts are JBL gto 429's only just fit due to mounting holes being 100mm and too big. Might go 5" components in the future but for I'm happy.

Sub is Kenwood ksc-sw11, mounted on cubby box , wires need a tidy up.
