Great thread.
I actually hunt fallow deer out here in Canada. One of your countrymen dropped deer off on Sydney Island here and they essentially took over. Fantastic hunting and even better to eat! A lovely pair of dogs in a very nice vehicle Huttopia👍 Just to lower the tone, here’s my boy after a tough day beating on our last let day. Bought one of those fleece jackets to dry him off and keep him warm (he’s zero percent fat and swam to retrieve a duck on the last drive and freezes in the back of the 110). You know when you have a premonition that something bad is going to happen and you ignore it........I was in the green one again yesterday shooting and drove up a muddy track into a wood. I had to stop for the vehicle in front to let a couple of pickers up out, when then went through a gate next to where I was on the track. As we moved off there was a proper bang, inevitably one of the chaps hadn’t put the gate on the latch properly and it swung open and caught the Heritage. Needless to say I shot like a complete 🤬 on the next drive. The damage was limited but new paint is in order on the piece of angled metal joining the side to the rear - it even knocked the head off a rivet 😩
I convinced myself for a while that it is a proud battle scar, but having slept on it my OCD can’t cope 😁 |

Do what I do. Go to the shoot in an ancient Defender or Series.
Then the gate owner will be losing sleep over damage to the gate! |

I’m a conservation shooter, sponsored by the RSPB etc, the pheasants revenge is the wing wave as they fly on past untroubled by my efforts!

Out of interest, who’s got a shotgun with a fitted custom stock? I’ve got a significant birthday soon and am spending money on a nice gun - either off the peg really nice gun or middle of the range one but have the stock made to measure. Nice to have that dilemma I know. |

I pop down to Coleys for a lesson! They have a great gun room too, massive choice. No custom stock, but Ian Bell at Tardebigge shooting ground can adapt to fit your needs. Either that or go down to the West London shooting school for a gun fit and they will provide all the dimensions you need. You’re a lucky man!

Premier Guns at Doveridge can offer stock work, there's a gunsmith (Simon) on site. I had an adjustable comb and Mrs G had hers cut down.

Paid £125 for my first gun, an AYA Yeoman ejector, in the early 80s then spent another £100 on getting it fitted - best £100 I ever spent & since then have always had stocks fitted. To do the job properly really needs a 'static' fit to get the basics right using a try gun which you then take out to the shooting ground for fine tuning then back to have the measurements taken off it so the stocker can either adjust an existing stock or make a custom one. My last purchase has two butt plates of different thicknesses that are removable to ensure correct length of pull in summer & winter clothes. Would certainly second the advice to head down to West London or even Holand & Holland, shooting schools (they're both pretty much next to each other & not far from M40 so pretty easy to get to from your neck of the woods) for a proper fitting & lesson, definitely money well spent - proper old school way of doing things

I went to the Purdey shop in London many years ago, lovely people in there, I knew nothing about shotguns but the staff were quite happy to talk to me about their product, & gave me a beautiful catalogue & order form for my next door neighbor who was a shooter.
