Rustproofing
Hi
My Defender 110 is now 3yrs old - I am not sure when to apply the rustproofing (Wazoyl or Dinitrol or other) to the vehicle. I dont want to spend money on the car unless its necessary but I do want to keep it in best condition possible.

Any thoughts as to when to apply this kind of protection welcome.

thanks

As soon as physically possible. It won't get any less rusty the longer you leave it. Darren

I've just been doing my 2003 with dintrol 4941 and the 3125 wax through the chassis holes on my drive. Access isn't too bad with it jacked up and with the wheels off. You may want to leave it until the spring now when it warms up again and everything is fully dry after a good scrub and wash

Grapax IMHO to save you money in the long run then a rust preventative treatment is a vital thing to get done ASAP. As commented above there is a very good Rust prevention topic running and this is sheparded by Chris AKA Zagato who does a very good job of it as his profession.

When to apply should be ASAP you if you have the benefit of a garage or workshop then you still have time to apply the reatment as you will have to thoroughly wash and degrease the underside to give the best surface for the product to adhere too.

What you use is up to you we all have our favourites on here.

If you wish to DIY then I'll refer you to my Rustproofing guide which shows that with some prep the home mechanic can do just as good a job as the pro's without paying them. you will just have to roll up your sleeves and put some elbow grease into the prep and application.

Part 1 Preperation is the key:

Part 2 Application and final results:

I would crack on ASAP - before they start salting/gritting the roads for winter... Thumbs Up

Wire brush, and FGertan for prep, then Dinitrol (or similar)... can't go wrong Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Hello Grapax Mine was 3 years old when I got it, very low mileage and stored inside...it was my second job
after some (hopefully) 'safe enough' security...

It's a Land Rover Defender...if you don't want to see if rust before your eyes it really does need some extra help in this area (IMO), Right up until the end of the Defender it was only given the most superficial of under body protection...some improvements made it through to the Chassis but Body Panels were all but ignored, Running Gear was only just about painted (again IMO), if you look to see what other manufactures were doing (as standard) Land Rover just couldn't bring themselves to tackle the Defender and give it the sort of protection that was going to potentially need, if really put to work...(rant over Embarassed )

Don't delay, do it straight away...my last of the line Defender Chris (Zagato) did it with a couple of hundred miles on the clock & even that was a bit late!

The chassis don't fair well with winter salt & if you take it to Chris he'll do all sorts of things with Dinitrol/ACF 50 etc...its worth it in the long run. Since 1973...S1, Air Portable's, Defender's, but only my Wolf TUL HS GS remains
