Slight grinding sound from the rear in 6th gear
I have a 2007 Defender 110 (puma) and have had no problems with the car since new. I have covered over 45'000 kms with it and the car has started making a grinding sound that seeems to originate from the rear when cruising at motorway speeds in 6th gear. However, the grinding sound only occurs when I lift my foot off the accelerator pedal and only when cruising at over 130 km/h.

Do you guys have any ideas for me?! I really appreciate it, thanks

130KM or 80MPH is quite excessive.

It could be the rear propshaft. When the UJ's get worn the prop can vibrate (actually they do this from new but dont usually rumble) causing a rumble sound especially upon decelaration (sounds similer to a bearing going).

Get underneath and have a look at the joints and also check the bolts are tight.

Russell.

In my car it was the rear diff.It developed exactly the same problem at approx.5000km and gradualy the noise started to appear at 4th ,5th and 6th gear from 80 to 130 km/h.
The local dealer changed the front diff the transfer box and both propshafts before shorting it out (poor thing).
Hope that helps.
