Do it yourself. I would do them though as that's a long time for the oil to be in there. 1951 80" S1 2.0

I have wondered about this, if the oil was in a bottle on the shelf for 4 years you would not throw it away.
So its not in a bottle its in a gear box which is low mileage why not the same logic used for the bottle? I am not wanting to argue just why not? |

But your oil in a bottle sitting on your shelf isn't going to be churned about potentially picking up swarf and other particles and possibly condensation / water. Steve.

Reading this with interest as mine will be due a year 4 service in a few months time. By then it will probably be at 13,500 miles. Unless the stealer can come up with a really low offer, I will do my own service now the warranty has expired.
The risk of condensation is the only thing tempting me to drop the axle and gearbox oils. Wondering if condensation could be a bigger problem in vehicles that aren't run long distances as the oils may not get as hot, or stay hot for prolonged lengths of time. Is there any science out there on this? It does seem a shame to waste the oil if it doesn't need changing. Then again, it isn't going to cost a fortune to change and I guess any initial component bedding in debris will be suspended in the oil or lurking at the bottom of the casings. So a change now would get rid of that, leading to another extended time period before the next full drain down. |

In a previous life before retirement I was a maintenance tech on a north sea oil platform.
It was practice to take oil samples on equipment that in not run often for analysis. This meant not changing the oil unless necessary. Now I am not a chemist so I cannot really comment, but that's partly why I asked a question earlier. Does oil degrade with time or is it by use. |

Just a note, that this service is the same on a year old car too... My cheapest so far is £720.
I believe LR have advised dealers to change diff oil every 'B' service as of 2013-2014ish... as this wasn't the case before. Unfortunately being hugely OCD i will be using a dealer for the foreseeable... even if it does mean i need to save up  |

I went through this situation last year.
So i bought 2 axel stands, a professional socket set from halfords and a torque wrench. Bought a service kit from advanced factors(site sponsor) And the oil for the transfer box and diffs from opieoils (site sponsor). And i did it all!! 
Spent around 250£ I had never done any servicing on any car. This year if i do it it will cost less then a 100£
