Might be a bit of a dull question but as someone that hasn't got a motor new enough for a DPF to be fitted, how long do you have to "vigourously" drive the things to regenerate them? Can you not just drive in a higher gear for a while? I know that my Td5 does drive differently, for the better, after I have driven in lower gears off road. Is this sufficient to clear out the DPF?

Daily drive for work is a 2.2 110 HCPU , which is used for farm work and some days may not go very far on the road and spends time pottering around feeding stock and never had any issues with the DPF light coming on.
Sometimes when driving after periods of pottering type work the engine has a different note to it and I have always assumed this to be the re-gen. cycle.
I know of a couple other trucks doing similar work and not heard of any problems. They do get a good clear out towing trailers quite regularly , perhaps this keeps the DPF healthy.
