I am not sure if this is allowed, but for our French members here is a good address for chains for all types of vahicle, where I have just ordered a second set from (propper 16mm chains)

I'm trying to do a deal with a supplier here in CH for HD Union chains with square links and cross bits at 18 mm.
Been at it for the last two years!

According to this,if you only have one pair of snow chains stick them on the front wheels.

Err, think you need to read up on differentials and the laws of physics, in this scenario you could easily lose grip on the non-chain fitted side and go absolutely nowhere (unless you had traction control of course but even then it would not be a good option and progress would be very slow indeed) Andy

Any views on the fabric versions of snow chains? (not sure of their actual name)

I have seen them used lots in the Alps and my neighbour has them for her Disco 3 and she goes everywhere to feed the horses in the fields.

Snow socks?

Think there ok for road use but not many miles of that, if you want to use them off road at all i would buy chains, they are a lot stronger!
