Puma 2.4 injectors - need to worry after 80.000km ?
Quoting from the current edition of the french periodic "LandMag"...

The weakest point of a Puma 2.4 are the injectors, which need to be inspected every 80.000 km, because their bad functioning may cause a total engine failure.

Is this a known problem, should it be a concern, and could it be checked?
And if so, how can a main dealer check if all is ok if at 80.000 km there is nothing going wrong yet?

I am having 79.000ish km now, so time to ask this on here.
Eric

Given the number of Defender and Transit Pumas which suffer catastrophic engine failure every day as a result of failed injectors, I suspect not! How many have you heard of?

Without more information, such as how they fail and what to inspect it is a rather unhelpful statement. I have just looked at mine (200,000 miles) and they're definitely still there.

I have heard of a single engine failure where it was suggested that an injector may have failed stuck open, filled the cylinder with fuel resulting in hydraulic lock and destroying the engine, but it was never confirmed that this was the failure mechanism. Is this a plausible failure mechanism? Just possibly, but if common I am sure we'd have heard about it.

Thanks Blackwolf, I am asking because for me this is also a first to read such statement.

Euhh, now that I come to think of it, Caterham, to be on the safe side I would immediately check yours. Laughing You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Very Happy ..... Wink

work in progress. just waiting for the seals and new bolts to arrive. Thumbs Up

suspect an intermittent sticking valve might be the problem (sometimes sounds on initial tick over like it's running on 3+1/2 cylinders, and clattering sound while on the move (sounds like injector noise and stops as soon as you take foot off the gas - so not sure if that could be a sticking valve or not?)

....one day....one day. - until then I live in hope.

I know it's a fairly common problem on the 2.0l TDCI engine as fitted to the Mundaneo etc etc (Spelt incorrectly I know Rolling with laughter ) But have never heard anything about it on the 2.4 or 2.2 engines..
I believe on the 2.0 ford even released a software patch to help cover the issue..As it was something to do with injector wear causing diesel knock due to over fuelling

Regards

We've had two die from melted pistons due to injector faults. Will try and find the photos. Sad
