Hi all, I need to do a compression test on TD 5 engine, does anyone now what size dummy injector I would need, also what's the best way of doing this, any advice greatly appreciated.

Hi, we used this kit from Snapon, had everything we needed.

Removed engine cover, air intake, bits that get in the way.
Then removed the glow plugs. I think we did it one by one the plugged the pressure gauge into the port for the glow plug and cranked the engine.

There are no exact pressures listed by LR, you are looking for major pressure differences. We found the issue on cylinder 1-leading to head gasket failure.

I would also pick up the Haynes manual as it's very useful if you don't have one already, so much quicker than trawling the interweb on your phone with oily hands.

Hope that helps a bit

Yes that's great thanks, when looking for a compression tester, do you know what size adaptors you used, I've been looking at some kits, not Snapon as this would be very expensive, but they only list manufactures, not model specific, any help would be appricaetd so that I don't buy the wrong kit

I have to ask, how do you check the compression on all five cylinders via the glow plugs? It wasn't me!

It was a couple of weeks ago now, but I reckon it was m10 thread an 4" long adaptor. didn't actually get any clear shots of the compression test as I was cranking the engine over from the cab. It's a two person job really unless you have a gopro or something.

Sorry I can't be more helpful. If you end up doing a head rebuild I can help with further advice as I have just been part of that process. My rad and thermostat were stuffed-leading to massive overheating and gasket cooking.

What I'm aiming at, is the ratio of cylinders to glow plug disparity. It wasn't me!

The only way to correctly do a compression test is to remove the injectors and fit a compression tester inplace of the injector as there is only 4 glow plugs on a Td5,

I could only do 4-was enough to find the issue with mine.

That's what I was trying to get to, without picking an argument.

As for the correct adaptors for the injector openings which is what the OP asked, I haven't located the correct ones yet. Then again, I haven't looked that hard. It wasn't me!

I do see your point ozzy. I'm not being argumentative either. I appreciate the fact that there is a correct way to do it.
It's been a learning curve for myself and my friend. Smile

You need something like this one : http://www.sykes-pickavant.com/products/co...ssion/2250 the push on one is only for petrol due to the high compression pressures in a Diesel it
would not be suitable.

Good shout there, like I said, I hadn't looked all that hard for one. It wasn't me!
