Thanks for reminding me Mal. I had suppressed the fact that I had spent a grand on Speaker head lights, in hindsight the worst purchase to date. Big Cry

I'm guessing they were Gen 1 versions Brian? Did you look at the Evo 2's when you got your Noldens, or just go straight for the Noldens? I'm thinking about upgrading my crystals and nightbreakers but prefer the looks of the JWS to the Noldens (which I accept is not the best way to choose between lights!) 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

On the 200 Tdi:

Best mods:

Galv chassis
Heated seats
Heated screen
Moulded matting floor trim
Disco transfer box

Worst:

Upgraded rear drums. Waste of time. Took both axles off in a rage in the end scrapped them and put a pair on from a 2003 Td5 Thumbs Up

Td5:

Best:

JE Engineering stage 2 remap
Allard intercooler.
Disco transfer box
Aircon removal

Worst:

Allisport rubbish intercooler that rotted out in no time. Utter rubbish.

I'd be very interested to hear more in depth about both the moulded matting and the rear brake upgrade.

What matting did you go for? has it made much of a difference?

Did you upgrade to disks or just upgrade the drums? What was so terrible about it that you scrapped both front and rear axles? Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

What's right with them more like.

A supposedly reputable wheel and tyre supplier was bringing in 18" Boosts. Lovely quality they are. They have been supplied to a few of the Bespoke Defender builders.

Unfortunately the reputable wheel/tyre supplier has not and it appears cannot be "bothered" to supply locking wheel nuts. Due to differences in the nuts you also can't get any to fit and I can't even get any made.

the fact that lockers are so easy to get off anyway ,you could say why bother having them anyway

also anyone one here had a set of wheels nicked off they defender ?

Not had any nicked myself but, A bloke in the next village to me had his wheels and tyres nicked, along with a few other little bits off his truck last year.- He came and said hello not long after we got ours and told us what had happened to his.

Best in no particular order.

Padded and recovered cubby box......FCX
Swing away spare wheel carrier..........Nakatenga
Clove box .............Nakatenga
Fire and ice side steps..............?
USB power supply in Cubby box.....Me
power supplies in rear for charging batteries while caravanning....

Worst.
Seat risers under drivers seat to allow more room at the front.........eyes level with top of door had to duck down to see to the right and left. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

Sorry off topic, but Stephen, that front view of yours is really smart. Naks grill I would guess, but whoseat make is the steering guard?

Brian

Thanks Brian. Thatīs a non-AC grill from Naka bent to fit the AC front-end. I liked the proportions better that way.

The steering guard was fitted by the first owner. Had an Off Road Service (Radolfzell, Germany) sticker on it. I added the stainless towing eyes - they come from Horn tools.

The mention here of cruise control reminded me too. Definitely one of the top mods on my Defender. From Terrafirma. Works a treat. So simple to fit to a Puma. Great value.

Best;
- Cut down Brownchurch roofrack height- now I don't clout it on the porch on our house.......
- Snow cowl- keeps all the leaves out from the trees that overhang our drive.
- 'Relay 99' wiper mod.

Worst
- Refurb of drivers seat- should have plumped for new covers as well as foams, my seat base cover is so stretched that there is no hope of it ever fitting 'just right'.

As nbr 1 should say the Recaros,... but in my case they were not a modification, just happened to be there from the factory. Whistle

So real top mods in order of decreasing importance:
1. Startech steering wheel,
2. Entreq rear mudflaps reinforcement brackets,
3. SS screws/bolts replacement and SS headlamp bezels,
4. Kaymar spare wheel carrier,
5. Landreiziger headlamp upgrade loom,
6. Land Rover 12S towing socket and Ctek charger,
7. Entreq snow cover (to keep all crap out of the ventilation channel),
8. EVO2s (bone dry),
9. Hella Comet 550 fog lights, some say... pig ugly warts that belong in the 70s or 80s Rolling Eyes , .... so actually fit the Defender style very well Laughing ,
10. Entreq front mudflap extensions.

A mod I have which is not making the top 10 Wink ...... Puma 2.2 fuel cap with "do not forget" leash.

Now, a new mod which I expect will move well up into the top 5 of above list this spring is one important engine reliability related item for the Puma 2.4 which I expect after a long absence to become available again soon from the German manufacturer... Cool

Last, my worst mod is by far the Le Perei LED number plate lamp, proven bad quality. But luckily there are good quality alternatives now. Thumbs Up

Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Interesting to read of everyone's experiences on here - good question for us beginners trying to prioritise the loooong list of possible mods into something more achievable.

I haven't had the car all that long, so haven't done too much to it, but top of my list would be the Mud seat rails - although they don't seem to suit everybody they transformed the seating position for me.

The only mod which hasn't earned its keep so far is the small wire framed net I attached to the back of the cubby - I haven't thought of anything to put in it yet! Luckily at that price I'm not fussed if it never gets used.

Edited: I've just been out to get a load of stuff out of the back of the Defender - the rear door gas strut has to go in joint first place with the seat rails!
