Dynamat
Has anyone Dynamatted their vehicle entirely internally and has it made a difference?

It seems really expensive, anyone know of other suitable alternatives.

I chose not to use Dynamat due to the costs. Did a bit of research and found that to effectively sound insulate anything you need 3 layers:

1. A heavy Dynamat type product to add weight to the panels. Does not need to cover panels entirely
2. 10mm plus of closed cell foam
3. High density vinyl type product on the outside.

I used some Butyl Flashing from Wickes as layer 1. A 10mm closed cell foam for layer 2 and relied on the rubber matting for layer 3.

I have done the whole of the inside of the TD5 HT apart from the roof. It has made a significant difference to the noise. Can now hold a conversation without shouting on the motorway and listen to the radio.

The work has highlighted the noise that comes from the bonnet - this being the loudest area left. I have bought more Butyl Flashing and some Dynamat Hood Liner (I think you need to use the right stuff next to the engine) and will be fitting it over Xmas.

It's never going to be a RR but it's getting pretty civilised now.

Hope that helps.

Nigel

Thanks Nigel

Very informative!

sorry K9F, new to the forum, just seen the search function now that you have pointed it out, will use that in future before I post to avoid repeat topics.

@ NigelM The roof itself would make a big difference as it's made of very large reasonably flat panels that resonate a lot also it's quite close to your ears.

Thanks Mk1, might give that a go with the Butyl as well.

Yeah best to do the Dynamat type product and the closed cell foam as it should get rid of the winter roof condensation that defenders seem to suffer from aswell as stopping vibration noises. Thumbs Up

I've done my doors and the rear tub. Just this evening I've stripped out the side panels and headlining to do a bit more.

The main source of noise is from the engine and gear box. For that reason I'm leaving those areas until last.

I've used a lot of dynamat in the past when i competed in Car Audio but I have switched to Silent Coat and I'm happy with the performance.

Here are some links to my blog detailing the work.

This has made a very noticeable difference to the noise levels. http://defender90xs.blogspot.co.uk/
