Grease guns

I have 2 grease guns which I use for servicing prop shafts on defender.

I have never been happy with the figment of the grease gun nossel onto the grease nipple as I don't find it seals well and grease end up going every where but into the universal joints.

I did chAnge the grease nipples on my UJ's for the extra long ones from G lewis but despite this still have problems with them not sealing or not being able to remove gun from nipple without unscrewing the fitting itself

My question is am I using the wrong size adapter on my grease gun? It here a specific size or make that works well?

You could try changing the nozzle on the grease gun as some nozzles don't always work and some do, i find with my grease gun it will grease the rear prop no problem but when trying to grease up the front prop the nozzle touches the UJ before it fits onto the nipples so have to resort to removing the prop to grease it

I use a cheap £10 Silverline grease gun,goes on easy enough, a bit fiddly detaching it but has a good seal and doesn't leak. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

I have several grease guns but my favourite for greasing prop UJ's is the one which I have fitted with a flexible shaft and ground two flats on opposing sides of the nozzle itself. Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades.
Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW.

The state of the UJ's makes a difference - if the are solid with hard grease - then with the new stuff taking the line of least resistance, that may be the seal on the connector.

This is the one I use that is perfect on the UJs. The flexible hose means I can get on the nipples and the fitment is tight enough not to leak.

Warming the grease in the Uj with a hairdryer/heatgun can help with the displacement of any old grease.

Thanks to all for the comments

The UJ's are an area I don't neglect, I tend to remove props at least once a year sometimes twice. If I find any play then I change the UJ's. I always use gkn one as the quality is good. As explained the only issue I have is regreasing so that I get grease coming through each of the bearing sets.

X Isle thank for the tip I think I will purchase one of those guns

At least I know that it fits and does the job

I had similar issues the first time I tried to grease props, consulted a friend with many years Land Rover experience and his advice was to grind the tip of the gun down slightly. Did that and it's been fine ever since, works a treat

I use an old grease gun probably my granddad has used it already. The strange thing is that you just push it against the nipple. If you the continue pushing the body off the grease gun in the direction off the nipple the shaft is pushed in the body and the grease into the nipple and it hardly leaks any grease.
Because it doesn't have to go over the nipple the head is small. Roel
