Having a similar conundrum here at the moment - although from a slightly different perspective. I am in the UK and we will be 2+3 kids - it is more likely to be a number of 2-3 week jaunts through Europe rather than a longer trip.
Current plan is to use a trailer: Click image to enlarge The theory being I can set this up and then use Defender to make short local visits or pop to the shops or whatever. With a rooftent, the whole thing has to be packed up before you can go anywhere. I took it for a trial run across Salisbury Plain on a muddy day and it was a bit scary properly off-road. Sideslopes were not fun and I had a particularly difficult slippery hill climb. Not quite sure what the procedure is for a failed hill climb with a trailer on. Made me think that I would not want to go anywhere too extreme with the trailer. Also, it takes about 40 minutes to set up the huge tent with awnings. If it were going to be a trip with just overnight stops, then I would probably remove those, so it is just the smaller rooftent part.[/img] |

I'm sure most of the time any vaguely serious off-roading would be done without the trailer?

Well, yes, that was the conclusion I came to as well.
But we are planning a trip through the Pyrenees with a group and either the route has to be planned with a trailer in mind or the other option is to have a bypass for the tougher bits and spend a few days in camp - giving the kids a break from full days in the car and then catching up with the group. I guess you can choose your own routes if you will be a lone vehicle. |
