2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Java Black

A good video review can help no end too... Techmoan on Youtube reviews a few and has some good approaches to explain what is good and what is not about some cameras. (For example: The best £100 Action Camera - TCL SVC200)
I bought a cheap one from Ebay that was a replacement rear view mirror (it clipped over the existing mirror). It wasn't suitable because

it was huge and the Defender mirror is not the sturdiest support for something big and heavy.
It also prevented the sun visors being deployed
The heating element wires in the front windscreen caused the video to be out of focus despite many efforts to correct it.
My cigarette lighter socket permanently supplied power to it so I had to manually turn it on and off each time!

Despite the quoted HD resolution I couldn't make out the number plates on vehicles clearly enough when playing back video. I will look at only the very best quality equipment for the next camera I choose, and I have heard good comments about Blackvue cameras, although I quite like the look of the Roadhawk that Lorryman posted.
It is also another (valuable) bit of kit in the vehicle that appeals to the light fingered c

s in this world.

I made a sample from my cam today to give an idea of quality. Mix of direct sun light, shade and normal overcast. Audio quality is okay considering the vehicle

.. camera fixed to the bottom of the window. Very little blur if any in day light when I freeze a frame so I can read number plates okay.

I wouldn’t. As the owner of a GoPro I really rate them, but not as a dash cam. For a start if you stick it to the roof rack you're bound to forget it at some point and leave it there for some scroat to half inch. The battery life really isn’t that good which means if your on a long journey your talking about changing batteries mid trip and even if you do have it on the inside with a constant charge the file looping isn’t set up like a dash cam, which means it won’t delete older files unless it’s constantly powered, even with the keys out.

IMO you want something on the inside that’s wired in and you can forget about it until you have a smash or some eejit decides to try it on and rolls across your bonnet. Nick

I have the Roadhawk, seems a nice bit of kit. I had some powering on issue’s with mine when I first got it but updated firmware resolved that. No issue since and that was probably over 12 months ago. The quality is superb and once it’s in you can forget about it.

Unless your opportunist is having a good poke around they are not immediately obvious as they are slimline and blend into the visor. Clearly this incognito appearance isn’t much use if you hang the wire down from the unit and don’t tuck it away

Buy one that has a screen - many don't. I'm on my FIFTH camera. All the previous four have failed, and the only reason I knew was because the screen went blank. I have bought the Transcend DrivePro 200 now. Seems to be very good, came top in AutoExpress review. Easy to use, which was what I wanted. Now left.
