I use Europe Offline Map and MotionX GPS HD on the iPad (with build-in GPS). As its name explains, Europe Offline Maps works with offline maps, so you do not need a data connection for downloading maps when under way. For MotionX you can download sections of maps before you depart or when you have a wifi connection.
Both programs are topographic in the sense that they show your postion and track but do not calculate A to B routes. I use a Google Nexus 7 (android) with MapFactor GPS Navigation mounted on the windscreen. All the maps and navigation are available off-line so no internet connection needed and it also gives you your coordinates
 Note you also have the option to buy maps from Tom Tom if you so desire but I use the free maps, I just keep them update regularly.
It also doubles as a Bluetooth connected music device to my stereo; films are also played on the Euro Tunnel or ferry. A great multipurpose device  90 & Wolf

I use memory map / MMTracker on Android and have the OS25 / 50 k maps loaded of where I am going. Works well for me 1999 Defender TD5 110

I have settled n Motion-X GPS HD, which for my purposes has the best interface and gives me all the data I need.
Using the Ipad I took some screenshot of my "backyard", printed them out and made a huge map out of them. Now I only have to check each little road to see if I'm alowed to drive through it and if it's worth it. i will mark them on my printouts so I should get a nice roadbook out of it.  |

Cool.
I'm also a GPS novice - I use MudMap app for iPhone 5 here in Australia. AUD$99 for the app and comes with several good quality maps of my backyard, including remote outback tracks. Has saved our ass a few times and gives great confidence in exploring. I'll be travelling to Spain in September - does anyone know if free/cheap maps are available for this? Sam |
