TD5 problem, help please
Hi All,

New to the site, wanted a Defender for a long time and bought one 6 months ago. Live in Angus in Scotland.

Didn't know this site existed until I started searching for answers to a problem i have with a 2002 Defender pick up TD5. Drove into town yesterday, after a 10 minute stop to go into a shop, couldn't start the engine. The ignition lights apart from the glow plugs warning light come on, the engine cranks over, but doesn't fire, and there's a yellow relay under the drivers seat chatters all the time the ignition is on. I did replace the fuel pump last week, and the battery was disconnected for this, but the terminals are tight. I get a reading of 12.4 volts from it, but I'm wondering if the high resistance between the neg terminal post and body is having an effect.

Any advice greatly appreciated

Where are you taking the negative reading from on the body? Could be a 'red herring' I would take it adjacent to where the negative is strapped to the vehicle or a known circuitry earth point. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

welcome to the site, it's probably worth searching for "Oil in the loom", this was a fault on pre-2003 defenders, and caused all sorts of intermittent ignition issues.

Thanks for the reply.

I took the resistance reading between the neg term post on the battery and the nearest untainted screw on the dashboard. There is no negative connection to the body, it goes to the gearbox only

Will check it out. Would I look for it at the ecu end or the engine rocker cover end?

Pull the red plug at the ecu end and look for signs of oil.

Sounds exactly the same as a problem I used to get Whistle There are 2 yellow relays below the drivers seat, (forget what they are for) Try wiggling them (the chattering one first) The contacts sometimes become worn Sad I tried tightening up the connectors, new relays , but the long term fix was to cable tie the relay in tight Thumbs Up

Sounds like fuel pump relay sticking. If you ignition on and can't hear the pump and the glow light doesn't come on then it is usually that. Take the first yellow relay out from under the seat and put it back in a see if it then starts.

The relay should,nt "chatter" if it does then it is switching on and off i would have a good look at that first,As previously mentioned check the red plug on the ECU (under the drivers seat) and check for oil if present this is a easy cheap fix for which there are plenty of threads on here.

I had exactly the same problem.
Replaced a (5 year old) battery that seemed in perfectly good condition and the problem went away.

Hi All,

The wiring loom red plug at the ecu is not wetted from oil, the relay is still chattering, could the newly fitted fuel pump be at fault? The pump make was vdo who I'm told make the genuine LR pumps. Cost £300 from Mann Autos in Laurencekirk who are reputable and well experienced suppliers and repairers. I hope it's not a faulty pump, was a difficult job to change it. Have tried tightening the wires around the relays.

Rich if the temp gauge goes into the red when you turn ignition on then it's a fault with the power control relay under the drivers seat, a tap on top of them usually does the trick to get it started

Try a substitute battery.
Swap the yellow relay with another one (assuming you've got two yellow relays)

Hi bga68,

Just removed the power relay, took the cover off, checked continuity of the coil 50 ohms! but it doesn't energise when the ignition is switched on, I guess it pulls in when the engine starts. There's a couple of the yellow relays in the fuse box in front of the gear stick, changed out with one of the 30 amp ones, still chattering and no start, all of the large fuses/ links are healthy.

Mmmmm not sure where to look next
