They look superb on her. Is that a size which has a lot of choice in brands/patterns? Mine is coming with stock 235/85r16, I assume with the width of the boost alloys I would not be able to go bigger than i.e. 265/75r16/

You're not recommended to go past 265 on the 7" Boost rims. Some folks have but you're risking the bead coming off. If you're going up to 285 or beyond, you should go for 8" rims or bead lockers (or both).

There are plenty of tyre choices for 285 Thumbs Up One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

I guess bead-lockers (asthe name suggests) are a means by which the tyre's bead is mechanically locked to the rim of the tyre. But are they something built into special wheels, or are they something that can be bought and applied to any wheel and tyre?

Is there much difference in fuel consumption going up the tread width?

bead-lockers are special rims. They are bolted on all the way round (so you need the rim to be drilled for the bolts).

As for fuel consumption:
In theory the weight of the vehicle won't change so at a similar pressure, the contact patch of the tyre should be the same (pressure = force x area). If the tyre is wider, the contact area will be shorter. That would mean the same amount of rubber in contact with the road, the same friction and the same mpg.

However, I'm sure there'll be other factors (you'll put more force on the tyre when turning so it might take more energy off in the bends; wider tyres tend to be more off-road biased and therefore have more heat loss, friction and a lower mpg...).

It's safe to assume that every modification to a LR saps your mpg Very Happy I installed rubber mats in the footwell and I'm sure it cost me 2mpg Whistle One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

No need for special wheels Thumbs Up i have these fitted in my wheels and they lock both beads unlike most other systems Thumbs Up

Sonic - they look quite effective. What do you do with the valve stem for the bead-locker? Do you have to drill a separate hole in your rims? One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

I was ok as i have Staun wheels that have the extra hole pre drilled, but to fit them in std rims you would need to drill another hole Thumbs Up
