Denmark 1991 Defender 90 200 Tdi ST Alpine White
No ignition on cyl. 1 and OIL through exhaust..
Hi. My Defender is from 2008 and 130.000 km. Yesterday it started smoking white/blue on the highway and went on 3 cyl. Off to the mechanic - they tested it to faulty injector on cyl 1… changed it but no luck - still no ignition or at least engine sounding like running on ether…very hard knocking. And oil is Pouring out through the exhaust (the flexible piece).
The mechanic called today and asked if I wanted them to continue - bill has already passed 1.000 eur..
Anyone experienced similar?? Fixable or engine swap before the bill goes further through the roof?
I am thinking I have to find another engine - does anyone know the specific engine type ( name)? and what type is it from the Ford Transit that can be used in a Defender (guess I will have better luck finding a transit engine)

Best regards

I wonder if you could have a broken valve spring? Could your mechanic do a compression check on no. 1? 1995 300tdi Defender 90 P/UP

oil in exhaust could be turbo ,but if down 1 cyl for sure then could be broken piston quite common on transit engine and that made heavy knocking sound ..sometimes put down to running with dodgy injector spray pattern causing broken piston (not 100% if true ) but was reason we were given ..
have you had any smoking rough running etc before that could be down to injector fault

or headgasket ?

Hi again - and thanks for replies. I fear it is the piston that is broken - a little while ago i experienced a lot of knocking when cold - used a little more 2 stroke and the engine almost went silent again - although not entirely - but I thought nothing more of it - until now Big Cry .
Cylinderhead comes off tomorrow and then I will know for sure.
Any problem in replacing a piston ? Anyone got an opinion about when to stop and look for a replacement engine?
I mean engine has only covered 130.000 km.

Best regards

Hiya
we have a fiat ducato in at work with 2.2. version of same engine, has done 160,000 miles on a 2010 model.
Fault, rough running, eml on, smokes like a gooden.
found fault code injector cyl 2 closed. Carry out comp test cyls 1,3,4 380 psi give or take cyl 2 100 psi remove head scored bores nackard piston suspect faulty injector may have over fuelled and over heated cylinder before ecu shut it down looks like new engine
