Mine makes the same noise and I also mentioned it to the dealer as I thought it was an exhaust leak. I think there is some kind of device just inside the wing that makes the noise but it does appear to be normal as everyone is saying.

As has already been said its normal induction noise which is much more pronounced in the Puma compared with earlier models. When are we going to see some pics Chris? Wink Steve.

I,ve had my 2.2 for over a year. When I first got it also noticed the very loud air intake......funny thing... you get to like it after awhile!

This thread is valuable advice. I spent ages at the weekend looking for a cause , assuming it was a vibration from the intake being amplified by the wing panel. Now that I know it is normal, I can just enjoy it as a power growl !

I am not yet getting used to/enjoying it. I find it irritating.

How are you finding the throttle response, engine braking, gearchange etc Chris? Steve.

Mantec snorkel sorts the noise till you drive next to a concrete barrier you quickly wonder which hose is busted lesson to be learnt, keep windows closed and radio turned up Cool use the creature comfort AC if your hot cant make the fuel economy any worse. 2013 Orkney Grey 110 SE on order should be here on 20/04

Actually I agree it is annoying noise. Let's figure the root cause... It isn't induction noise as such, but seems to be a resonant frequency at a certain air flow as defined by the rev range. The filter unit is also well buffered from the engine inlet by a soft hose on the engine sided of the filter. Tracking back, the plastic moulded pipe from the wing to the filter seems not to be the culprit either since bracing this firmly has no effect. This leaves the immediate cavity behind the wing grille which I think is acting like a drum since you can feel outward pressure pulses even with air flow inwards. Adding a snorkel seems like it is just dissipating this frequency up the tube. So that's my theory. What I am contemplating is adding some weight to the plastic back of the initial intake point so as to throw it off its harmonic frequency. That's a job for the weekend and I will update with the outcome. Fingers crossed....

My experiment failed - I put aluminium bracing strips inside the inlet area to stop it vibrating. May have helped very slightly but with the grill off and the engine running there is quite a pressure wave pulse coming down from the air filter. Not figured out how to kill that - maybe I will go the snorkel route but that seems expensive

By going the snorkel route all your going to do is starve the engine of air which will make your performance poor !

Just leave it it's one of a defenders many quirky things
