New 2.2, odd noise? Or do they all do that?
I bought a new 110 XS USW last week and drove home from the dealer in the rain, windows closed, all was well. Once on the drive I did not use it for a couple of days, by which time the weather had cleared up. When I drive the car with the (drivers) window open there is a noise which sounds a lot like a blowing exhaust. It does not seem to get markedly louder at higher engine speeds and loads as one might expect from a blowing exhaust, I wondered if it might be something EGR related - it is audible in the wing intake vent at tickover when you stand next to the vent.

So, is it a case of 'they all do that sir' or is it likely that there is something amiss? Apart from being a long way to the nearest Landrover dealer I do not want to get there only to have them tell me that there is nothing wrong (and that Landrover intend their product to sound broken!), at which point I feel stupid. I have no other 2.2 available to me for reference. I also cannot seem to be bothered to get wet (raining again) and probably burned looking for a leak myself. Perhaps it is a DPF thing?

Any thoughts/suggestions?

Cheers

Chris

Chris, you sure its not just the air intake noise, it is very pronounced on a PUMA over your Td5. Cheers

Hi Chris

I have a 2.2 CSW and when I first got it I had a similar worry to you. The demo 2.2 that I had driven had a raised air intake and I hadn't noticed the induction noise but on the one I was delivered (no RAI), the noise was very pronounced - almost embarrassingly loud. I wondered whether an air boxhose had come off or something.

For the 1000k service I got them to look at it and they gave me another 2.2 (no RAI) as a loaner vehicle. It too was very loud (although didnt seem quite as loud as mine). The dealer came back and said everything was as it should be. So I guess they are all like that.

I have since added a factory RAI and the noise is greatly reduced.

Thanks guys, perhaps it is normal then. It certainly is almost embarrassingly loud. I will try to get a listen to another if I see one around...

Mine did this too and I wondered also if something was amiss but was reassured by the dealer that all Puma 2.2's do this. Thumbs Up
Since fitting the 'snort induction mast' it is oh so much quieter. (It has to be done). Laughing You only have one life, live it....forget the cost.

When I was looking for a 110 I test drove a 2.2 and I raised this with the dealer, I noticed it sounded like it was blowing quite loudly. When I took it back, they said this was perfectly normal for the 2.2 Tdci, anyway I went for the 2.4 in the end.

Interesting intake cover in your photo. What make, & do they come in other colours? Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender
