Insurance fraud has been an issue in some form or other for many, many years, plagues 'honest' insurance paying individuals and bumps up premiums, irrespective if it's car or home insurance.
It also amazes me how many people grasp a particular subject become 'barrack room lawyers' and 'insurance experts' in a jot!
Remapping is an individual choice, things for us could potentially be a lot worse (look at the German TUV rules) for fitting extras to our Defenders. Maybe on reflection the TUV rules are not so bad after all? Wonder how many of our German forum members have circumnavigated these rules themselves?
You're much more likely to be hit by some scrote that hasn't any insurance, driving licence or tax at all than by someone with a remap!
Those that do have remaps it is their conscience and not yours that will make them to decide whether to declare or not. Not a fictitious soapbox on a forum. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

I don't have a problem with re-maps K9F.
I am considering going down that route at some stage myself.
I'd be the first to admit that I'm no expert & don't think that I've pretended to be one.
All I have a problem with is reading BS about not declaring re-maps to your insurer & talk of flipping maps/ECU's to try and cover your tracks in the event of an accident. '57 Defender 110 XS Station Wagon 2.4tdci

it was just a solution to a problem, i myself have it in writing with my current insurer i can modify the exterior as long as no performance is gained. being a young driver (20) a map might be too much of the insurance company but insurance is due soon so will try my best for it...

I'd of thought that obtaining + affording the insurance for a mapped Defender was not a problem, compared to covering an Aston Martin Wink '57 Defender 110 XS Station Wagon 2.4tdci

I think the insurance companies view is the Aston is designed to cope with plenty power and goes round corners quite well, a defender with 50% more power than it came out of the factory with.....

I have always understood that insurance premia are based upon risk, and that insurance companies have sophisticated risk and trend analysis software to establish this.

So, insurance for young drivers costs more becuase the statistics show that in a typical population of 100 20-year-olds 99 will have accidents, but in a typical population of 40-year-olds only 5 will have accidents (these figures are fictitious to iluustrate a point, before anyone gets uppity).

Statistics show that 1 in every 100 Vauxhall Corsa is written off, however of that 1%, 99% have ridiculously large exhausts fitted. Therefore fitting a ridiculously large exhaust to a Corsa ups your premium.

Defenders generally are not involved in accidents because you have to be either mad or an enthusiast to want one, so generally they are driven quite sensibly (they are however stolen, but theft is relatively cheap for insurers compared to crashes and personal injury claims). Therefore compared to some vehicles they are probably quite cheap to insure.

The effect of a remap on your insurance premia probably depends what that company's statistics say for remapped vehicle accidents. It is unlikely that they have enough data to assess if remapping a Defender makes it more likely to be involved in an accident (I serously doubt it has any such effect), in which case they will look at remaps in general over all vehicles. Does remapping a Corsa make it more accident prone? Very likely, in which case you insurance will go up.

The answer is to find a specialist insurer who really understands what they're taking on.

What ever you do - do not advertise on an open forum like this that you have made mods to your defender unless you have told your insurer - they often use forums like this.

Better still have a fleet policy where they just charge a price per vehicle & no questions on mods as all our vehicles are modified to greater & lesser extent depending upon what they are used for Thumbs Up 2020 P300 HSE

was only insured on it for 1 week when it arrived, best week of my life tho... when i turn 21 in january we are looking into insuring me on it, its a shame because my mother doesn't use it and dads out the country lots of the year, and if its winter he is home, it stays in the garage.

defender insurance initially was a bit more than the regular car, but its dropped significantly somehow... down 1500 since i first looked at quotes
