Oil cooler
Hi all,

I'm leaking coolant from around the oil cooler on my 2011 2.4. Hopefully just the thermostate which I've ordered and will fit tomorrow.

If it's the cooler leaking, then I'm thinking about swapping it for the later 2.2, so I can use the spin on filters / rather than the paper cartridges.

The LR part number is LR058091 and I'm looking at ~£170.

Does anyone know:

1) Whether it's a straight swap on to the 2.4?
2) What the equivilant Ford / Citreon part number is (the couple of Ford ones that look similar I've seen on ebay are much cheaper - £50-£100)?
3) Whether you can use the Ford / Citreon version on a 2.4 Defender? 2011 CSW XS 90

my 2011 2.4 has the later oil cooler fitted with spin on filter, it came with it but looks to be a std swap. Cheers

See topic https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic78318...oil+filter on changing to later type oil cooler.

See topic https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic82970...thermostat
on whether you should have / not have an oil cooler thermostat.

Thank you both.

The coolant appears to be leaking from between the cooler and the little thermostat housing; so I assume the o-ring has perished.

I've ordered part LR005894 - not sure whether that comes with a thermostat inside or what temp it opens at (someone stated TºC???).

If it does, I think I will remove the thermostat spring based on what's been said on the shared thread.

In addition, I have a Webasto coolant preheat, so one would assume without the thermostat the engine oil should get up to temp quicker? 2011 CSW XS 90

Part arrived this morning with a spring inside.

Removed the spring and valve.

Fitted (got absolutely drenched with coolant) and noticed the old one had the spring / valve removed too.

The O-ring on the old one was totally shagged, and the housing was really perished, with a chunk missing that I fished out of the cooler.

edit:

I have a 2011 and the cooler / thermostat has never been touched, so mine must have come from the factory without a spring / valve. 2011 CSW XS 90

A result that you don’t need to replace the whole oil cooler Thumbs Up

Also , that bares out what Degardel said on the linked topic above, I.e after circa 2008 LR stopped fitting the thermostat, replacing with an empty thermostat housing pipe.

For many of us in the UK with the later Puma’s ( mine is a 2013 2.2) there is no fuel cooler so we have to drain coolant from the oil cooler as you have done . As you experienced it’s a bad place to drain from as the chassis prevents a direct line from the removed pipe and oil cooler to a bucket , the draining coolant hitting the chassis and going everywhere. Even with lots of strategically placed buckets it still goes everywhere and you need to hose down the inside and outside of the chassis and other components it’s come into contact with. I wear goggles when doing it as you don’t want coolant splashing into your eyes.

Note: - The coolant LR use is Delo XLC , if using a concentrate it’s a 50/50 mix with deionised water. Its cheaper than getting it from LR, but can be hard to find. https://www.texacolubricants.com/en_uk/hom...olant.html

When refilling and bleeding just follow the workshop manual process to get air out of the system

Very happy not to have to change the cooler!

Ah... I have been topping up with the pink/orange Halfords OAT Ready Mixed Antifreeze & Coolant.

https://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine-o...16147.html

Is this likely to cause an issue?

I likely lost about a 1 litre of coolant (clamped both hoses to try to minimise loses - although I'm sure every last millilitre landed on me).

Will run through the bleed process now! 2011 CSW XS 90

I suspect that being an OAT the halfords one will be ok, however the actual specification for the coolant is ford WSS-M97B44-D, which is very, very similar but not exactly the same as GM Dex-Cool.

I believe the Halfords OAT will say its good for 5 yerars, whereas the LR / Delo XLC is meant to be good for 10years, although I change more frequently as generally a radiator fails before 10 years Very Happy

I tend to avoid mixing coolant from different manufacturers if I can, but sometimes it’s unavoidable.

Thanks Ian.

I look to refresh all the coolant for GM Dex-Cool when it gets its full service in June

Kind regards

Just ensure whatever you use meets the ford WSS-M97B44-D specification. Delo XLC certainly does as it's what LR use and sell, just bottled with the LR label. Ford obviously sell their coolant of that spec, and so do other companies such as comma. If you do a search for that spec you will find may vendors and prices.

You will need at least 13 litres of pre mixed , so probably three 5L containers, or a 5L and 2L container of concentrate plus two 5L containers of deionised water.
