Oil Cooler Thermostat yes or no?
Oil Cooler Thermostat yes or no?

My existing oil cooler thermostat was leaking coolant so I purchased a new one and fitted it today.

I was concerned when I removed the existing unit as the thermostat spring and valve had been removed so fully open at all times.

I fitted the new unit fully intact and all seems well. I have now read that some are recommending that a thermostat should not be used!

Would appreciate opinions on this and the pros and cons....if I have to change it, I will!

2014MY, the oil cooler was changed and the thermostat removed

Whether its there or not, you won't have any issues, so long as it doesn't leak Laughing

There are two replacement parts, one contains the thermostat elements, the other does not.

Installed only on the very early Pumas, from 2008 it was no longer installed by LR . Absolutely redundant (it is the temperature of the water that drives) and induced too many oil pressure drops. Indeed, if installed it is better to remove it.

Understood...I read that thread earlier.

Why then do all the major parts suppliers sell the full thermostatic unit for the range of chassis numbers right up to 2016?

I spoke with a Landrover mechanic today who said he always fits the fully functioning thermostat...it is for the reason that opinions vary that I raised a new topic on the subject.

It simply isn't clear which way to go in my opinion but I would like it to be.

Looking at the LRworkshop site diagrams with part numbers it shows that all 2.2’s have the thermostat housing without the thermostat parts fitted, ie just a pipe fitting. Part LR029936. So that covers 2012-2016.

So in part answer to your question, for a 2.2 it’s a no to an oil cooler thermostat.

Also intriguing that a landrover mechanic would fit one with a thermostat to a 2.2 when it was not originally fitted when built at the factory.

The mechanic was aware I have a 2.4 engine so it may be his answer would have been different if I asked about a 2.2.
Still none the wiser!

Probably something to do with them adding the variable pressure oil pump on the 2.2
