Wheezing sound in turns
Hi dear defender lovers.

I have been having some issues with my 2003 defender td5. It makes a sort of wheezing sound when taking turns. I have attached a video with a link where you can hear the sounds. Has anybody ever experiences similiar issues or may know what this could be? Thank you so much in advance. In addition the ABS and TC lights are on and do not shut off anymore.

Perhaps wheel bearings… suggest you check those and prop shaft u-joints. Thumbs Up

Does it make the sound only whilst moving. Or also when steering stationary?

If all ways look at power steering pump.

It only makes the sound while moving, no sound when moving stationary. What would be the difference between the two? Thank you for the replies

Good to know. Thank you for your help. I will then check the wheel bearings and u joints! Will keep you updated in case someone else runs into similiar issues at some point.

Does the noise increase with engine rpm or with vehicle speed?
Does the noise change depending on which gear you are in?
Does it change between applying power or engine breaking?

Answers below:

Does the noise increase with engine rpm or with vehicle speed? - Noise does not increase in loudness just gets faster, so increases with rpm

Does the noise change depending on which gear you are in? - No, the noise remains the same no matter what gear

Does it change between applying power or engine breaking? - No the noise remains the same in both sound and loudness no matter applying power or engine breaking

Does it change between taking a left or a right turn? - It is much more noticable when taking a left turn, when taking right turns it is softer and less dominant

Once again thank you so much for the help from the community. It feels truly unique with Defenders!

Indeed, thats what I actually meant in Q1, if noise increases frequency with engine speed.

So with your reply, it seems to be at around engine up till gearbox input shaft.

If you can hear the noise by just increasing engine speed while parked, I would take off the auxiliary belt and do a quick test without the belt. But should only be a very short and quick test as the water pump will not be circulating water. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

The sound is not there when turning in stationary, which means it has to be related to wheel rotation, no? Sorry I am very much a novice in this field. thanks a lot once again.

No, there is no clicking sound to hear, it is truly just the sound you hear in the video which appears while turning.

Sounds like something rubbing to be honest, have you put bigger tyres and not adjusted the steering stop bolts?

Try removing one propshaft and do drive test with central diff lock engaged. Once I had Def with damaged front diff and it was running nice but i bit noisy. Without front prop shaft the noise was gone. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile
