Whilst I like Snap-on, Halfords professional tools are generally very good and great value especially if you have a Halfords trade card. Most bits carry a life time warranty too Ride like you stole it!!
If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do…

Having bought a couple of Facom spanners across here, and they are super quality, I think you'd fill the Defender with fuel, drive to the ferry, pay for a trip to UK, drive to Halfords, buy a 180 piece set and drive back to France for less than the equivalent Facom set would be!

Big fan of the Halfords Pro stuff, mines still going great after 20 years, only things to break were the foam sheet that stops everything falling out (replaced with thin underlay) and the plastic hinges are getting weak so always store with a nylon strap around it. Always in the car with me.

Bizarrely I find Amazon the best place for Facom,Wera and lately Norbar. If your in no rush add what your after to a saved for later basket and keep an eye on it they flick to 30-40% discount quite often Thumbs Up 110 MY23.5 X Dynamic HSE

Machine Mart kit is very good value and quality. I have quite a few bits from them and happy with it all.

My travelling sets are Bacho and Halford. Shadow boards are good when out and about. Cheers

Consider a set of aviation spanners off ebay. They won't be the best, or have a lifetime warranty, but I have found them extremely useful.

I have a set of Sealey Pro ones which have come in really useful.

Thanks all, great replies. As CarMan and RDR suggest, I'm not always in the UK and was looking for something trustworthy enough to snap off Amazon.

Interesting that so many here like Halfords -- given the warranty it does seem relevant. I spotted an online Sealey deal so will do some comparison between those and any others. Strangely most sets I found go up to 24mm only.

I bought a set of teng spanners, very happy with them. Many years ago, a friend of mine once found some snap on spanners in a local car boot sale, he got from 8mm to 21mm for a tenner. He still goes on about it…… 2006 TD5110 station wagon

Just a thought - the nuts and bolts on a Defender can be standard hexagonal or in some cases Bi-hex (12 point).

The bolts holding on the swivel housing are 14mm bi-hex. These won't accept a socket and this is where the aviation spanners came in handy. The bolts on my brake calipers are 13mm bi-hex and they needed a quality 13mm socket - the cheaper sockets were not good enough as they had too much play.

I have a 1993 90 so may vary from yours.

And if you get a socket set, consider a breaker bar too, especially if you are doing wheel nuts.

Many thanks all for your thoughts.
In the end I went with a Gedore set as the range and the warranty were good.
Strangely that set didn't have a 26mm but that happened to be one I did have already.
