A mate of mine has just had his recalled, he’s got a 90, my question is (sorry if it’s already been asked) do you have to inform your insurance about this, who pays for your car if you have an accident? I’d be a little worried about this if it were mine 😳 Optimists say the glass is half full..
Pessimists say the glass is half empty.. Engineers say the glass is twice the size it needs to be! |

No, you are under no obligation whatsoever to tell anyone. > who pays for your car if you have an accident Your insurance provider, which may then try (probably without success) to recover the cost from JLR. A more interesting question would be what happens if you don't respond to the recall and then have an accident as a result of the defect. In that case I could envisage the possibility that your insurer would argue that you should have had the recall work carried out and refute any claim, and JLR would also claim it had taken all reasonable steps. |

Some even more interesting questions... what if your vehicle is recalled, but you never receive the letter because JLR lost traces of the vehicle whereabouts / ownership.
And what if your Defender was recalled, and brackets were fitted, but an independent garage decided to leave them off because its too much of a faff to say replace a swivel housing seal - I know this has happened when I was on the hunt for a replacement front axle case! How would or your insurer or LR have proof that you received the recall notice? Not as if they have sent it registered. Frankly other than maybe the first owner who did not move address how does LR know the address of the owner, do they get a download from the DVLA?

Funny how JLR gets info from the DVLA and uses it whereas DVLA gets info from Land Rover and does nothing about it

To be proactive you can look at the vin ranges for the recall and look to see if they are fitted.
Visit Landrovers online service history to see if it’s highlighted as a recall https://osh.landrover.com/ If in the uk look at the mot history site to see if there are any recalls.https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/ It’s not perfect as some owners just drive their defenders and don’t get involved with the mechanics and are not members of forums so will be blissfully unaware of the issue, may not get a letter, may have had the brackets removed by prior owners, etc. |

In theory, I've just had mine done... Not!
I booked my 2012 110 in to a main dealer, in pristine all-white showroom, (loads of office & sales staff, no sign of engineers).- where the work was carried out yesterday. When I drove it in to service reception, I was told. 'strange. we've had a lot of old Defenders in recently'. The gentleman didn't know why. I also received a vehicle check list, showing things that required immediate attention. 'LH windscreen wiper requires replacement'. It didn't it was fine on the way home. 'Clutch M/cyl pipe not secured to gearbox' I couldn't see the offending missing clip/bracket, but will get the vehicle up on a ramp next week. So this morning I crawled under the vehicle, on our very muddy hill, only to find that absolutely nothing appears to have been touched, or any brackets fitted. Still just as it was previously. The bodywork & interior had been impeccably cleaned. (Sadly I passed several very muddy tractors on the way home, now the vehicle is dirtier than ever!) What is the explanation? My vehicle sits firmly within the recall dates. The work took a day, & cost me in cab fares meals out etc. Apparently I will receive a questionnaire today, asking me how satisfied I am! Presumably anyway, the dealer had no stock of brackets, who knows. Another thing, my wife received a phone call from the dealer, desperately wanting to buy the vehicle from us... My wife's reply was that it wasn't for sale although she wouldn't mind a test drive of the new Defender, just for fun. David. |

David, if your Defender went in for the recall bracket but they were not fitted call the dealer and ask what happened!

Maybe the dealer agreed the bracket was just not good enough a solution and swapped out the axle casing instead

Definitely nothing fitted or replaced!
Still the same front axle, with the same marks on it. One would have thought that the dealer would have had the decency to explain that either: it didn't require doing, (I've just checked the LR history for my VIN number, & the recall shows as still outstanding..) Or that they didn't have stock of the brackets, or what other plausible explanation they might offer. But absolutely nothing in the way of an explanation. I arrived early to collect the vehicle, which had already been 'done' - fully washed & valeted, & was on the forecourt. However I was told that it wasn't quite finished yet, & had to wait another hour! It's a bit like the old joke about spare parts: 'I know you can see them on the shelf, but the computer says we don't have any'! Watch this space, I'm awaiting the dealer's Satisfaction questionnaire... David. |
