Based on the EU recall's production dates, and assuming it affects all variants, the VIN ranges would be these:

BA820528 - BA826097
BA400000 - BA412050
CA412051 - CA427758
DA427759 - DA440736

About 45,000 vehicles built, with at least 70% in Europe as a whole and approx 16,000 for the UK.

It's sad that it's come to this

It looks like JLR are using the vin ranges they responded to the EU with. See above from Will@LRW. Posted on page 14 of this topic. So should cover vehicles up to sept 2013.

Just received the N706 letter for my Sept 2012 110SW.

Has anyone had any NDT/Scans of the welds? Is it possible on the vehicle without removing the axel?

An engineers report on poor welds to send to LR might convince them to replace an axle?

PAYNEY1000 has been there and done that and more yet here we are. He was instrumental in getting the French authorities to push the EU to tell JLR that the axles need to be replaced but so far this has not happened. For some reason there is an upsurge in recalls for the magic brackets to be fitted. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Just checked and my MAR 2012 90 has friction welded axles which is a pleasant surprise.

Indeed a pleasant surprise.
As I do not doubt your skill to differentiate between mig and friction welded axle casing flanges, I find this so strange. My August 2012 is mig welded.
Maybe someone found an axle in their gray stock, and decided to use it. Damn, they should have discovered it 4 months later Whistle

So do you also get the N706 recall? Cool

Yup got the recall looked at the axles to check. I suppose it's best to give it back to them to put on useless bracketry.

Front Axle brackets
I presume if you didn't contact JLR to get the brackets fitted the recall notice would sit on the vehicles records and could be flagged up on an MOT test or certainly could be an issue when it came to selling the vehicle?! Mine had an oil leak from the axle weld back in 2019 and rather than argue the toss with JLR I got a 300TDi axle fitted instead.....don't think I need the brackets now but for the above reasons will probably get them fitted.

I would have joined in the fight to get JLR to sit up and do something about the axle issue but having spent a year of my life fighting them to cover the replacement cost of an engine after the known fuel pump issue. I just couldn't face it and needed the vehicle back on the road.

Thanks, its helpful to have the range. My VIN is in that range but I've not received a notice. I tried contacting the local dealer who just told me there is no outstanding recall on my vehicle. So now I've tried contacting LR to see if I can get a sensible answer. Can I ask if others within the VIN range are also still waiting for a notice?

Mine is a AA vin number so I guess at some stage I should fit the brackets I brought as it’s a 2010. But outside of the recall vins Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details

It is easy to tell if you have a friction-welded axle tube, the appearance is very different to a MIG weld (and is illustrated adequately earlier in the threads on the subject).

Production of friction-welded axles came to an end late in 2010 and it was not until late 2013 that the problems associated with the initial MIG welded axles were identified and resolved, so any vehicle built within this period could have a defective axle. I do not know of any way to distinguish between a MIG welded axle built during the problem period and a MIG welded axle built after the problem was corrected, and I don't believe axle numbers were recorded, so there will be an ongoing risk in the case of vehicles with non-original axles and with second-hand MIG welded axles.

As I recall the testing carried out due to Payney's altruistic insistence actually concluded that none of the LR front axles irrespective of weld type conformed to the expected strength standard for type approval, but this is arguably a red herring in terms of the weld issue. It probably does explain the not-insignificant number of incidences of split case failures on heavily-laden chassis, such as 130 cherry-pickers, which was known to be a problem long before the ends started breaking off (as was the problem with 130 chassis failing in the middle).

According to my information, it happened about a year earlier, end of 2009, early 2010.

We also do not know what changed in the welding process to improve it, or what was the cause of the poor weld in the first place. We do not know if it was wrong material, inadequate penetration, temperature/cooling issue (wrong machine parameters) etc etc. Would had been nice if we could see an 8D report of the issue. But certainly, that will never happen. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

So the recall letter is subject "Safety Recall - N706 - Front Axle Case Flange Reinforcement Brackets.

Yet my understanding is they don't reinforce anything?

Correct, they don’t reinforce the axle case.
It’s just another cynical and child like attempt to word this recall as if it is the solution to a highly dangerous life threatening issue when plainly it’s not.

It’s bad enough that JLR don't care whether people die or receive life changing injuries, but for the DVSA to not force them to rectify the issue is truly shocking.

The other line in the letter that got me was "during ongoing quality assessment and improvements of our Defender models" aye right - why would you now start this now 8 years after production ended?
