I don't know about the UK VAT, but going through the car trade will never be a zero sum game. I would think a 20-25% markup for their "services" would not be unreasonable. So they give you 37k and then sell it for 45k.
To avoid that you have to through private sales where you will get a higher price for your car and you can buy a cheaper car, but private sales are normally a bit later in the lifecycle, it's obviously also much more hassle |

If an dealer buys your car with no vat then he should be able to sell it without adding any vat. Presumably you paid vat when you bought it and never claimed the vat back?

Yes l paid VAT but couldn't claim it back.
So it would probably sell to someone in a similar position. l don't mind selling it for £37,000 if that's all it's worth. But looking online l can't find anything similar for under £50,000 including VAT. There's a couple in the classifieds on this forum but few people can afford to buy one outright, they need dealer financing. The dealers are all going off the price guides but they must be plus VAT for the Commercial version. |

The VAT (if applicable) is simply paid and then reclaimed - it’s not an inflated price or extra profit margin!!
If there is no VAT to pay then the truck will be sold with no VAT albeit (I think as its quite some time since I looked at it) the Dealer will be responsible for a very small amount of VAT on his profit due to the “Margin Scheme” - presuming they ate VAT registered |

Because you were not registered for VAT you never claimed the VAT back.
The vehicle is now flagged as “ VAT Paid” It can never be sold + VAT.. Once sold VAT can never be reclaimed. So… for anyone who can claim VAT back your vehicle needs to be 20% cheaper to be a viable purchase. Dealers do not like VAT paid commercials as the market is limited. The best buyer for your car is a private individual who is not VAT registered. Clemmo ![]() |

I know you are looking to change yours…but the longer you keep your car the difference between VAT Paid and VAT reclaimable diminishes with depreciation.

I'm selling my 3yr old 110 today for a decent chunk over the 'recommended' trade price, and far above the finance settlement figure. Even then, I know I'm still missing out on 3-5% of what I could make with more time selling privately.
So it seems like it is a good time to be selling privately (if you can be bothered to deal with the scammers and the tyre kickers). I definitely would not part-ex it without negotiating pretty hard and comparing their offer with BAC/Motorway/Carwow. With the dealer having to take some risk, a time in inventory, warranty responsibility etc, they inherently over-protect themselves by diddling you. WBAC seem to be a bit of a mid-ground. Not amazing, but also not terrible. |

Mine has been on sale for weeks in the classified section of this forum with not a single enquiry. Priced at £40,000
lt's got quite a few extras on it from the factory and has been very well looked after including clear wax coat underneath etc. So l am thinking, the dealer offer of £38,000 may well be all it's worth, despite there being nothing similar available for anything like that price. Motorway are telling me it's worth £39,000 trade. WBAC says £33,500 !! |

I would think that most people on here already have a defender. I wasn't aware of this forum until after I bought one, and then I came looking for specific information.
A couple of weeks on Autotrader will give you a good idea of the true value. |

I'd list it on Carwow- I did and it was much more than motorway and webuyany car. In the end i got a good offer at the auction i set a reserve price) but bettered it with a call to Sytner Sheffield who bought mine without any photos and a quick 15 minute check ath their site.
