Another Issue - Wipers!
Hi All,

I've been away with work and for one reason or another I havent driven my Defender for probably a month or so.

Jumped in it this morning, went to clear the windscreen and I have water but no wipers! I have checked the fuses and they're fine. I have had a search on the internet and on here, but everyone's issues seem to be that the wipers have moved and then got stuck and mine just arent doing anything!

I am a complete mechnical numpty, so I wondered if there were any other little things to check before I send it off to the garage to get it looked at?

I am really hoping that it isnt the motor as that job looks like a nighmare to do with the dash having to (mostly) come out!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Forbes

This Defender has been mostly brilliant, but recently it has really been testing my patience with it seemingly breaking every time I go near it!

Have you tried lifting them off the screen in case they're stuck ?

Hi Mo,

Thanks for your reply, I have just tried that, and also sprayed down the spindles with some penetrating oil, but still nothing.

I wondered if perhaps the relay had gone, but I can hear that merrily clicking away too, so I am guessing that it must be the motor that has gone?

Balls.

There isn't a relay on the wipers. There's a intermittent delay timer, but it doesn't run the wipers generally, they are wired direct to the switch.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Ahh, got you, thanks Martin (sorry for my lack of mechanical knowledge)

Might have to take it to the garage then!

You could try to see if power is getting to the wiper motor using a voltmeter. If so, then it could be that the motor is stuck or broken. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Hi I'm just guessing that it's the wiper wheel boxes and cable that need replacing. Its quite a primitive set up actually just a toothed disc behind the wiper spindles being spun left and right by a cable (that's more of a long spring) and no matter how well it was greased at installation they just wear out - especially in a wet climate like we have here in Ireland. I got 10 years from mine before the wipers stopped working. It's extremely unlikely to be the motor. Apparently they pretty much last for ever. The good news is that the parts are cheap. The bad news is that the dash does have to come off but find a good Indy if you dont have the confidence to do it yourself and its not that big a job to a good mechanic who will probably have done a few of them by now
