This Defender has been mostly brilliant, but recently it has really been testing my patience with it seemingly breaking every time I go near it!

Have you tried lifting them off the screen in case they're stuck ?

Hi Mo,
Thanks for your reply, I have just tried that, and also sprayed down the spindles with some penetrating oil, but still nothing. I wondered if perhaps the relay had gone, but I can hear that merrily clicking away too, so I am guessing that it must be the motor that has gone? Balls. |

There isn't a relay on the wipers. There's a intermittent delay timer, but it doesn't run the wipers generally, they are wired direct to the switch.

Ahh, got you, thanks Martin (sorry for my lack of mechanical knowledge)
Might have to take it to the garage then! |

You could try to see if power is getting to the wiper motor using a voltmeter. If so, then it could be that the motor is stuck or broken. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Hi I'm just guessing that it's the wiper wheel boxes and cable that need replacing. Its quite a primitive set up actually just a toothed disc behind the wiper spindles being spun left and right by a cable (that's more of a long spring) and no matter how well it was greased at installation they just wear out - especially in a wet climate like we have here in Ireland. I got 10 years from mine before the wipers stopped working. It's extremely unlikely to be the motor. Apparently they pretty much last for ever. The good news is that the parts are cheap. The bad news is that the dash does have to come off but find a good Indy if you dont have the confidence to do it yourself and its not that big a job to a good mechanic who will probably have done a few of them by now

No it doesn't. All parts of the wiper system can be removed and replaced with the dash in the vehicle, although it does have to be freed from and pulled away from the bulkhead. Doing it this way negates the need to disconnect as much. It is still a non-trivial job and one some people may find intimidating but it is far from difficult. The subject has been discussed several times in the past. |

Did my motor, cable and gearboxes the other month, just moved dash back a bit, still took a while, 3hrs from memory? I had no movement at point of failure.
Motor was probably alright with just worn worm drive and gearboxes but sforza peace of mind I did the lot whilst in there. Cheers James 110 2010 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |
