Aux belt pulley bearings
Hey Folks,
Started getting 'the whine' a few weeks ago, which is getting worse. I pretended I had a Supercharger for a bit then grew up and decided to sort it.
I removed the viscous fan and aux belt then started spinning things;
Tensioner pulley rough but also BOTH idler/ guide rollers at the top, nearside of the block.
Did a quick Google and forum search and it looks like I have to replace the tensioner but what about the top two..??
Can I fit new bearings and does anyone know what size I need..?.

Thanks in advance.

I chased a squeak on mine and replaced all the bearings I could - only to find the squeak still present - it was the belt. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Thanks John - i've got a new belt to fit.

The three pulley/idlers in question are rough and rumble when spun. They definitely need replacing.
I was hoping somebody had the sizes to hand so that I can order them and do the job on the second visit.
Experience tells me that if I don't finish a job it tends to stay nearly finished for ever... Laughing 2002 Land Rover 110 Td5 Utility

IIRC I think Goebloke did replace the bearings and supplied part numbers. I don’t think he’s posted for a while. Think you might find it in his lengthy build thread, pm him or do a “search” I’m 99% sure the info is on this forum somewhere.
I just replaced them all with new …….

Quick search threw up this, not the bearings, but replacements, but I know I read about replament bearings somewhere Rolling Eyes and I’m pretty sure it was geobloke

Quick update on this, the workshop have looked at this and advised the idler pulleys are at fault / 'worked'. Service advisor did not state which specifically. Similarly advised the aux belt and tensioner could do with a replacement.

They are fitting ALLMAKES parts:

-ERR6493 IDLER-TIMING BELT
-ERR6658 IDLER - ANCILLARY
-ERR6951G TENSIONER-TIMING BELT
-PQS101490D DRIVE BELT - AUXILIARY - TD5

I did ask for JLR genuine items, however was shortly advised not available from them any longer. They have assured me these are high quality.

After checking with them, it appears the Aux Belt & Tensioner are All Makes OEM, whilst both Idler's are All Makes aftermarket as advised not otherwise available

Thanks Jim - that's great info and gives me a place to start the search.... (The original post that you quote refers to 'timing belt' - I'm assuming that's some kind of autocorrect thing kicking in..?? My phone changes things without asking me - the machines are taking over..!!!! 😄).

I'll remove the Idlers and measure up the bearings and post on here - might help somebody in the future.. 👍👍 2002 Land Rover 110 Td5 Utility

I replaced a few too many of these so I can't recall what the td5 has, but the plastic ones you have to buy new as the bearing cannot be replaced. The metal ones you can push out and push in the bearings (a set of two I recall).

I have actually been hoarding the metal ones as you can often replace the plastic one with the metal one and I prefer to buy high quality bearings, rather than rely on the manufacturer to choose for me.

Realistically though unless you do a lot of miles whatever bearing you have will last a while and they are easy enough to diagnose and replace again if you find you received a dud.

That's the badger..!!
Absolutely perfect - thank you 😁

I've just removed the two top idler pulleys and can confirm that they both have the same bearing fitted - NTN 6303 LHA.

Just had a go at knocking one out (coulda phrased that better 😀). Bloody hell - they're in there tight. Might need a press.

Can anyone recommend a good make of belt tensioner..?? They are not easily refurbished so I'll just buy one of these and a couple of bearings for the idlers. Prices vary from £25 to £125 for the tensioners....

Thanks for all the help - it really is appreciated.

Thanks, as always, for your help 👍

Just in case it helps anyone else, this is what I've done/am doing;

Click image to enlarge

Auxiliary Belt (non AC) = PQS 101490
Belt Tensioner and Pulley = ERR 6951 ( not easily refurb'd)
Idler Pulley (inner) = ERR 6493 (about £60)
Idler Pulley (outer) = ERR 6658 (about £35)
Or you can just replace the bearings in both Idler Pulleys - same bearing in each;
OE = NTN 6303 LHA
Quality equivalent = Timken 6303 2RS/C3 or SKF 6303 2RSR C3
I've gone for a pair of SKF @ £11 for the two.

Now, there isn't much land with which to drive the old bearings out:

The diameter of the hole in the pulley is about 41.7mm so you'll need something about 41mm to knock the old ones out.

Hope this helps.
