I don’t know if anything internal would be audible.
I know my exhaust heat shield rattles a bit, as it broke one of its fixings. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Mine does this. I’ve rebuilt mine with new pistons and rings after honing the bores. All measured within tolerances but obviously slightly bigger now on the bore. Doesn’t do it when warm. I think it’s the pistons rattling in the bores when cold and small.
There are also two or three points that can minutely change the timing on these engines 1 the available turn on each cam sprocket when setting up 2 the sideways movement available in the crank position sensor bracket I am convinced alterations to these have effected how noisy mine is when cold in the past I have an 8 mile drive on slow A roads on way to work before motorway and no rattle but a two hundred yard roll downhill to the motorway on the way home and hit the motorway still cold and it rattles if I accelerate hard on the on slip. I just drive sympathetically |
