There's two ducted fans behind there, used for cooling the MHEV battery/inverter.
lt looks like that may be the air intake for one of the fans, so it may just be that one of them was running. |

Thanks for that. It was a pretty cool day, so perhaps a bit concerning!! Was ok today though.

lt will most likely depend on how the MHEV system is being used, maybe a series of shorter journeys with repeated stop/start will cause the cooling fans to run.
Sometimes when l get out of my D250 the main cooling fan for the engine (well at least that's what l assume it is) will start up and run for a couple of minutes. lt doesn't seem to be dependent on how warm or cool a day it is. |
