Won’t start
Hello, my friend has a 2.2 tdci that was sat for a while and now it won’t start. Had it in a Land Rover and they said starter motor which he hand changed and it still won’t start.

He’s lost faith with them because they have now said it’s just ‘wear and tear’ that it won’t start but there’s obviously something stopping it.

Work from first principles.

1.As it was sat for a while the starter battery will have drained significantly and if old may now not hold charge well. So get some Jump leads, connect to another vehicle and with its engine running see if defender will start. If yes it’s your battery.

2. Check battery terminals are clean and clamps fitted correctly, best to remove, reseat and re torque terminal clamps.

3. Check alarm module ( ALM unit , was 10AS on earlier vehicles ) fuses . They will be in the fuse panel below the steering wheel . Fuses are F1 = 10amp Red, F8 =15amp Blue, F9 = 20amp Yellow, F10 = 20amp Yellow and F20 = 10 amp Red.

4. Change FOB battery, use CR2032 Panasonic or Varta. Resynchronise fob with ALM unit by, with doors shut, pressing lock 4 or 5 times in quick succession, then unlock once. Doors should unlock. Make sure fob is on key ring with key and see if starts.

5. If you have Lucas fobs, ie not last version with chrome strip down side, then you will have a ALM unit CHxxxxxxxxx version. This version of the ALM unit can suffer a brownout of the software if the main starter battery is left to drain down slowly and significantly. This will stop the ALM unit sending the de immobilise signal to the Engine ECU. This can be fixed but will require it to be sent to remotekey https://www.remotekey.co.uk/shop/land-rove...trol-ecus/

So do tests 1 to 4 and report back with more info, I.e is central locking working ok, is dash lighting up ok, does starter motor turn ok but engine not start, or does starter not move at all.

From here we can see if it’s a big fuse or relay issue or perhaps the immobiliser.
