Rear Axle shock absorber Cups
Hi,
2010 defender 2.4 puma 110
I bought some Monroe rear shocks and apparently I have to remove the rear axle cups so the bushes can fit properly due to the pin being too short.

A couple of questions
Is there any disadvantage to removing the cups?

Can I still fit the longer pin / later style shocks without cups in the future?

2011 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 CSW Sumatra Black
I removed the cups off my axle when I fitted the pin to pin suspension on the rear. If you wanted to go back you could maybe use the Gwyn Lewis shock bush isolation washers with whichever bushes you have. Might be worth looking into it yourself first though.

They aren’t hard to get off, drill the spot welds and then I used a chisel just to finish knocking them off.

In my experience, Monroe shocks are not that great. We had a customer's car come in that just had Monroes fitted all round by another shop. The car was heaving and wallowing like a drunken sailer. They had saved his "old" shocks (100K+ and leaking a bit) and we refitted them. All back to normal.

I've no direct experience with Monroes meant for a Defender but they wouldn't be my first, second, or third choice.

Can I ask how you even identified where the soot welds even are? I attempted this this morning and had no idea…took ages with a hammer and chisel. Now cannot face doing the other side!

It probably depends on the application and shock model. Monroe make the Old Man Emu Nitrocharger shocks for ARB and they are good. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

4x I believe, you should be able to find a video on YouTube somewhere, I have seen one I think.

IIRC, you can lightly drill the too then use a cold chisel to knock them off, a slightly time consuming job as you can imagine. _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___
