Defender TD5 no speedo, odometer, fuel light on, gauge full | |
Hi All
This is my first post, I want to tell you a story...
Our year 2000 Landy 90 TD5 had been off the road for a long time having repairs to the frame and bulkhead. I did some of the welding myself but the more awkward ones were tackled by a local chap. In order to deal with the bulkhead the whole dashboard had to come out and I've only just got round to putting it all back. Now during this time the instruments were out, in, out etc etc and I felt I was getting used to the task of re-connecting all the plugs. The Landy, which we call Dora (don't ask!) had not been run for quite a time and we were keen to see if she would fire up. I applied the key and SUCCESS, she burst into life! But... Oh dear, what's this? No mileage displayed, and the fuel gauge read full, but the low fuel light was on. OMG, the welder must have scorched some wires underneath while plating the outriggers.. Well, I have spent the best part of two weeks trying to fix the fuel issue. The fuel tank was neither full nor empty. Hmm I'll come back to that, but the speedo was duff too. Out came the instrument panel again and after numerous bouts of head scratching I suddenly realised the two plugs going into the speedo were identical!!! Whaaaaat!!! I quickly swapped them round and BINGO, problems all solved. I cannot believe the sense in Land Rover leaving this potential trap for us, such a simple thing to add a bit of plastic onto one plug and a make a cutout in the socket. I wonder how many others have fell into this trap?
