United Kingdom 2000 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Alpine White
Defender TD5 no speedo, odometer, fuel light on, gauge full
Hi All
This is my first post, I want to tell you a story...
Our year 2000 Landy 90 TD5 had been off the road for a long time having repairs to the frame and bulkhead. I did some of the welding myself but the more awkward ones were tackled by a local chap. In order to deal with the bulkhead the whole dashboard had to come out and I've only just got round to putting it all back. Now during this time the instruments were out, in, out etc etc and I felt I was getting used to the task of re-connecting all the plugs. The Landy, which we call Dora (don't ask!) had not been run for quite a time and we were keen to see if she would fire up. I applied the key and SUCCESS, she burst into life! But... Oh dear, what's this? No mileage displayed, and the fuel gauge read full, but the low fuel light was on. OMG, the welder must have scorched some wires underneath while plating the outriggers.. Well, I have spent the best part of two weeks trying to fix the fuel issue. The fuel tank was neither full nor empty. Hmm I'll come back to that, but the speedo was duff too. Out came the instrument panel again and after numerous bouts of head scratching I suddenly realised the two plugs going into the speedo were identical!!! Whaaaaat!!! I quickly swapped them round and BINGO, problems all solved. I cannot believe the sense in Land Rover leaving this potential trap for us, such a simple thing to add a bit of plastic onto one plug and a make a cutout in the socket. I wonder how many others have fell into this trap?

I think we have all fell into that trap at some point, when dealing with stuff like that, Computers for me mainly. I remember the old AT motherboard PSUs you had to have the the earths in the middle! other wise the you could blow the board, I added a bit of tape back then to get around that problem.
Anything Electrical etc, i take photos. Just so i can have a ref. Many times when me and my dad were dealing with the metro, we had something to go back to. Thumbs Up
My dad still fails to photo things before he goes at things, then starts to put when he cannot get it back together. Then its up to me to sort things out Rolling Eyes Sometimes he goes at things like a bull in a china shop, before taking his time and photo everything Thumbs Up Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
