Pedantically it won't have a VIN, it will have a chassis number!
There is no chance whatsoever of retaining the registration number on the vehicle based on what you say, but if you can find original contemporary documentation to support an application (such as an original log book, delivery records, genuine photographs., etc) you may be in with a small chance. If you think this may be possible it is ESSENTIAL that you contact the registrations officer of a DVLA-recognised club (I'd suggest the Series 2 club) before you do any dismantling or restoration of the vehicle. If you do not, or do not follow any advice that the RO gives you, you will definitely not get the original number back. If you are successful in retaining the number it will be marked as non-transferrable. If there is no supporting evidence then the vehicle can be dated from the chassis number and supported by the club RO you should be able to get an age-related number, provided that enough of the vehicle is original and unmodified. If the vehicle is a "bitsa" of randomly-dated parts, or the parts cannot be proven to be contemporary, or if it clearly modified, it will get a "Q"-plate indicating that it is of indeterminate age. Bottom line, contact the RO of a DVLA-recognised club as a matter of priority. |

Totally agree with Blackwolf, Peter Holden is the Series 2 Club Registrations Officer and is very knowledgeable about all things DVLA.
You can register on the S2 club forum free and contact him there. |
