No I don't think it is a Defender thing, but my rear brakes started squealing recently after I overhauled the calipers. At the time I found the backing plate (soft-ish) plate at the back of the pads had come loose and I left it out. I understand these backing plates are there to stop squealing so I bought a new set of pads which I intend to fit soon.
What pads where fitted? I think some cheaper aftermarket might not have any real provision to stop the squealing. The Quality of the brake pads are definitely a factor. |

It not clear exactly what you mean by squeaking - do you mean when the brakes are applied, or all the time the vehicle is in motion?
The only rear pads I have yet found for my 20076 110 that don't squeal when applied at some stage in their life are genuine LR pads. Even quality aftermarket seem to squeal. All pads also tend to rattle unless the anti-rattle springs are in extremely good condition and correctly fitted, there are non-standard anti-rattle springs which can also improve the rattle prevention. |

Agree with above. A previous Defender always had brake squeal. Only way I found to stop it was to fit Land Rover pads. And I tried many other brands.

I find the standard pads to actually be the best for longevity and reduced issues.
I did use EBC Green at one time, they were fine but found them to be a bit lacking cold, and when at temp get over heated instead. No noise related issues though. So I use the standard type, last well, no issues, a lot of noise issues are down to poor installation or hardware in my opinion. _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___ ___\⭐️Lone|Star|State/___ ____\We|Will|Win/___ ____/🇬🇧🇺🇸\____ _//*⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰*\\_ |

From my experience the Gen LR pads work well, last well and don’t squeal on my standard 2.2 110 CSW. Given they last so long it’s not an extravagance to use them. Wisely buying a few tanks of diesel will quickly cover the extra cost above the cheaper pads.

Yes they squeal when brakes are applied. Worse in the rain.
I’ll give that a go. They’re not that much more expensive and probably cheaper than other aftermarket gear…and cheaper than new callipers which was the next thing they suggested I change! |

Before biting the bullet on new pads try a light smear of coppaslip on the back of the pads where the caliper piston pushes it.

I spent ages trying to sort out the dreaded 110 rear brake squeak. My 90 has never had this problem...
The reason the genuine pads don't squeak id they come with anti squeak shims, from my research I couldn't find anywhere that sold just the shims,so,I made a set myself from 0.3mm sheet steel.I already had 1 old one to copy for a template. You have to make sure to fit them the right way round, effectivly so that the caliper piston pushes the pad so as the leading/front edge or the pad touches the brake disk first.I hope that makes sense? Marc. |
