Lakes recommendations?
I'm looking to spend New Year (also my Birthday Rolling Eyes ) in the Lakes, any body know of any good Cottages to rent or really nice Hotels?

Mrs Greeni trawled through for about 2 hours and struggled to find something just right...I suggested camping Laughing Believe me, I would Cool

Lizzick Hall hotel, just outside Keswick.

Stayed there a few times now, not cheap [but nowhere is around the Lakes] but we like it.
Pool is nice too Cool Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

We stayed here (Ambleside) last time:
http://www.brathay-lodge.co.uk/

Top notch B&B (well, nearly). Good offroad parking, nice choice of rooms, walking distance to some great restaurants & pubs. Ambleside has a great range of pubs & restaurants.

Another interesting place in Ambleside - http://www.compstonhouse.co.uk/index.htm (the New York room looks good!) - but they don't allow children, so couldn't stay there last time, as my brother has 2 kids...

A great day is:
1. Open top bus to Grasmere, spend a couple of hours looking round there, and walk back round Rydal Water, and stop at the Rydal Hall Cafe for a great coffee and cake!
2. Walk up to Lily Tarn...a fantastic viewpoint right down Wintermere
3. Loads of offroad driving Thumbs Up - good mountain biking too

We don't like to have to "commute" to eateries (because I like a glass of wine on an evening when away on holiday), so has to be walking distance into town...

The "Lucy's" chain offer good value food, and a relaxed atmosphere at decent prices. Lucy's on a Plate is our favourite eaterie for evening meals (they also do some really quirky service which is great!)

Not done self-catering because my Dad has a holiday home near Kendal (which he doesn't rent out, but it's too basic anyway...) Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

If you want a posh hotel, the Armathwaite (north-west of Keswick) would fit the bill. Eye-wateringly expensive though, dread to think what the prices are like over Christmas.

Don't know of any recommendations for small holiday cottages, cos er, there'd not be much point in staying 20 miles away. I know of a few bunkhouses but I doubt that's what you're looking for.

Anyway, what I would say about the Lakes is avoid the usual tourist spots like Windermere, Ambleside and (to a lesser extent) Keswick. Around Christmas time you'd struggle to tell the difference from Piccadilly Circus (apart from the scenery). As long as you're a couple of miles out of these you'll be fine. If you want proper isolation, you can't do much better than the Duddon Valley (Dunnerdale) in the south-west Lakes. It's a sod to get to hence the solitude. Must be a few holiday cottages up there - I've stayed in an NT one there but it was huge.

Oh and if you want a bit of cheeky greenlaning, south Lakes is definitely the better bet. I'd offer to show you round but I will be spending Christmas and new year in London/Cambridge Big Cry

Oh and I'll be staggered if they have any space, but try the Kirkstile Inn at Loweswater. No idea what the accomodation's like, but it's the best beer, pie and scenery in the Lakes Thumbs Up
