I think we are quite lucky over here in that Land Rover have really pushed the ‘Classic’ department to keep the old Defender alive.

Yes, only £200,000 buys you a restored "Classic" Defender lol
You can get a very nice old model Defender for 1/10th that price and the best of the old ones are in the range £30-40,000 |

I think it comes down to horses for courses. Since I was about 6 or 7 I have been a fan of Land Rovers - one evening my Father arrived home in a long wheel base Series 2 soft top - that was me for life. Since then I am on my 10th Defender ( includes Series and pre Defender 90D Turbo ). As I progressed in life - 200 tdi, 300 tdi, TD5, 2.4 Puma, 2.2 Puma and finally a D250 110 dynamic ( did I mention Discovery's and Range Rovers, Land Cruisers, Touareg, Cayenne - V8 - missed the most and an ex military Light Weight which my Wife christened Dick). My work vehicle is an INEOS Grenadier. Would I go back to an old Defender? Yes - about every few days I have to drive my 2012 XS station wagon. On other occasions I have to have a drive in the D250 ( if my Wife allows me). But - sorry to say this - when it comes to work it's the Grenadier. I keep reading how the new Defender is better than the Grenadier - the Grenadier is better than the new Defender - in my opinon they are both great vehicles but for different reasons. All I know is that I love them all and am truly thankful for the variety. My latest one in a 1960 Series 2 swb petrol ( No 11)- its in bits at the moment but any day soon it will be back off road!!

"There was really no way for JLR to turn the classic Defender into something that belonged in their model lineup in my opinion. I think they missed an opportunity when Ratcliffe came to them and asked to take over Defender production"
Land Rover could have built a Grenadier However l doubt it would have sold anything like as many as the new Defender. But they could have done both. Last edited by lightning on 29th Jul 2025 11:40am. Edited 1 time in total |

Anything is possible given enough time and money. As cool as the Grenadier is, its still not on the creature comfort level of lux that the Defender is... and remember that the Defender is not supposedly a luxury SUV, even though thats exactly what it is and how its classified. Taking the tooling of the classic Defender and adding things that today's market demand like 360 cameras, automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, full curtain airbags and modern safety systems would be extremely challenging in a technical sense. 2022 Defender 110 SE P400 Tasman Blue Expedition and Cold weather package 2003 Hummer H1 P400 Firehouse Red 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser |

The Ineos doesn’t have any of the mentioned.
Live axle front and rear make for a strong statement… just curious to see if it is reliable or not. A lot to prove. |

Thank goodness that LR did tell Jim to get lost. The Grenadier would not be half as good as it is if the old Defender had been the starting point. |
