It should sound almost like 5 x chukka chukkas. This is normal as the self clean cycle is working. If you do a search for the EGR, you will see that this has been covered in detail many times and will help you to decide whether or not yours is an issue or normal behaviour.

I've read some. But this also does it when you press the accelerator pedal! Also only started at about 30k! Don't know if that means anything!

It could be the EGR action is sooted up, and the squeak you are hearing when driving is the EGR valve responding to the inputs from the EMS under duress. Do you hear the chukkas when you shut down? If so, unplug the EGR valve electrical connection (you know it is closed) and go for a drive and see if the squeak still happens. You will get the MIL light and it may enter limp mode so just switch off and restart to clear it. If not then it would be a good bet the EGR is causing the noise. If it still sounds after the EGR is disconnected then it could be a number of things ranging from a loose accessory drive belt to a failing/dry bearing on the Air conditioning compressor, Vacuum pump, Coolant pump, Power steering pump, Alternator then there is the Crankshaft pulley and the Engine cooling fan pulley, and not forgetting the 3 deflection pulleys and the Automatic tensioner pulley.
 Also it could be the start of an air leak in the Intercooler/airbox hoses, or something has come loose or maybe you have a family of mice living in the engine compartment  
I'm afraid you will have to do a bit of fault finding to narrow down the source of the noise, but I would start with the EGR valve

That sounds interesting I'll give that a go. I do always like to understand what the problem is without the work shop manager guessing. Think he had made his mind up before the landie arrived.
