2011 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 HT Santorini Black
Light Switch
Surprised Hello, I have just bought a new defender and am a bit confused as to the where the main light switch is positioned just next to the ignition. I am finding when you need to take the key out you have to switch the lights off. Can you move the light swicth or put the ignition on the other side of the steering column. Advise as to any ideas would be accepted.

I always thought of that as a neat bit of low tech design to remind you to turn the lights off when taking the key out, instead of some annoying bong or chime Smile

It should still be possible to remove the key with the lights on if you really need to though Confused If you're finding it a struggle, then just turn them off, remove key and turn them on again? Darren

why do you want to leave the lights on ?

You take the keys out. Leave the lights on and then do what - turn them off by any chance ?

I must be missing something.....

The steering column shroud has provision for an identical switch on the opposite side to the light switch, so if you really wanted to you could move the switch from the left of the column to the right.

I have in mind using a modified second lightswitch mounted on the right for auxiliary purposes at some time in the future, making use of this "feature".

Just think it make's it awkward sometimes to put the key in the ignition. On another point I find the headlights off cars coming from behind seem to reflect off the front window making it look like a car is coming from another direction. Would anyone recommend tinting the back windows. Think the jeep is brill and looking forward to going offroad

Two points

First, never ever ever call it a "jeep", it is a Land Rover Defender.

Second, tinting rear window makes it worse. You'll get used to it.

I'll forgive the 'J***' comment once and once only.

As for tinting we have 70% on everything behind the B pillar. It's great but vision is limited somewhat. I've had it from day one and am used to it. Never noticed your problem with lights from behind so perhaps it does work.

think the headlight switch is bad, wait until your spine bends and stays that way to suit the LR seats and pedal position....

Diesel_Jim, I am only 5'6" so actually fit in the the cab. I can see that it is quite compact. My brother has a TD5 and says there is a bit more room because the dash is further forward. Love my Defender, but the wife says ' what the #### is that I have bought. I have driven a Disco 4 for the last 12 months.

My daily driver is a shogun, nice comfy driving position.

I had to go to Heathrow today in the 110, even with the drivers seat pushed right back my knees were quite "bent".... but I love it!

Jamie - make yourself some seat runners or pack washers on the rear fixing so that the slider is not hitting the join.

I might try the washer modification. I made some seat runners a while back but the extra height of the seat (OK, only 3/4", using box section) ended up with me looking directly at the sunvisor (i'm quite large... 6'5")
