Advice on underneath.
Hope this is the correct place to post!

I am contemplating the purchase of a basic 2013 44k miles Keswick green 90 BUT what are people’s thoughts on the state of the underneath? What’s a sensible solution?

Hmmm... If its a good price then fine.

A good steam clean of the chassis and underside, followed by rust killer treatment, paint where required and then some form of protection applied over the top.

The rear axle looks a lot more corroded than the front axle.

Was it used to put a boat in the water or something similar? “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique.

The problem is not as much surface rust as is clearly present, but more the caked full of mud places higher up that allow water and salt to sit and fester. Regular HP wash makes all the difference and most obviously don't do that.

Rear end most effected. If possible if you can reach up and test the pockets with brackets and the outriggers. Even so worst case you have to budget for some replacement, it depends on the price of the car obviously and if you want perfection or just minimal work to pass MOT every year.

Was it a farm vehicle or used at the coast?

Suggestive of not much TLC in the last 10 years.

Unless it's particularly cheap I'd be looking elsewhere as there are others out there in much better condition

For a low mileage 2013 vehicle that IMO looks pretty rough. Must have been launching boats or something and not really cared for.

Questions:

1. How cheap is it?
2. how long do you plan to keep it for?

If the price is right, then ok. Also if you don't plan to keep it long, it won't likely be an issue. But reality is, it will likely need remedial work sooner than a similar aged vehicle in a less rusty condition.

On the farm we have a B reg pickup, a C reg V8 pickup and an E reg hard top. Combined they have covered 700,000 miles. None of them look as rusty underneath.

Impressed how clean the engine sump is compared to the rest. Guess already had rusted through and replaced. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Hi

not very beautiful the condition of the chassis there has been no cleaning it looks like a chassis from the last century. I have a 2007 model with some leaks but the chassis is in better condition.

I am sure that if you approach a high pressure cleaner the defender will run away in fear Rolling with laughter

It might be a good idea to find out if any companies near you offer laser rust treatment brilliant process

I'd be more interested in how the chassis looks inside.
