I remember looking a while back when I did mine, typical ripoff mark up from Land Rover. Denso or genuine Ford were a fraction of the cost. WARNING.

Unclip the fuel return hose off the back off the PRV then crank it. If the PRV is spewing fuel then it's gone and needs replacing (it is a friction fit ball bearing that pops out so not resettable)

I am inclined to agree I would change the VCV again for known genuine trustworthy one (read here https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic85644.html)

You could try febi bilstein 46366 for the PRV/OPV/PLV/howisitcalled. (~90€ online)

Workshop manual says:

"faulty VCV" = "malfunctions in the high-pressure system"...

This erratic behavior actually points to the VCV. Possibly also the crankshaft sensor.

The VCV does cause very erratic behaviour, I do know for a fact that my last one was killed of by moisture or some water in fuel…
I know because I used a fuel station I have never used since as a one off, after filling up there a couple of days later it cut out after being started multiple times and things like that.
It was definitely after filling up at that fuel station, and a new VCV and fuel from another fuel station cured it.
I used up most of the fuel with the old VCV first, but there must have been water in the diesel, that I do know as a fact, and it killed the VCV.

Probably leaky old underground forecourt tanks I expect. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧
